Default So what's the difference??

This may sound dumb...but what is the difference between a hypercharger and a thunder airkit?

I personally think the tornado air kit looks faster.

If I put the Tornado on will I have to alter the computer or what? Is it hard to put on yourself?

Nothing. They're all just air filter housings and they're all just for looks. Buy the one that looks best to you.

The air kits actually flow at a higher cfm than the hypercharger.

You'll have to back that up, y'know. Sure, there will be minor variations in flow rate, but you'll see about zero effect from the forward-facing butterflies.

Wow, lots of replies...but unfortunately, I'm no smarter today then yesterday (Tomorrow isn't looking good either) But basically, it seems like there can't be much difference between them. I was leaning towards an airkit, but just wanted to make sure I wasn't missing out on something special with the hypercharger.

No you're not. With calculated cfm's/cyl @

2k RPM = 28 CFM
5k RPM = 71 CFM
8K RPM = 114 CFM

Each one is more than adequate, but is a 2%-7% (whatever their claims) gain on 40 hp worth $300?

In effect, this validates to a degree Rowdy's earlier statement, that they are merely ornaments, but doesn't necessarily prove it true either. Yes, they do have a performance benefit. Is it enough to make a huge difference? My answer is no.

2% of 40hp equals ---- .8 hp,,hmmm,,for $300.00,,,, No thanks. Not to mention the fact that the hypercharger sticks out and from most of the people I know who have them says it gets in the way of your knee while riding. All but a couple gripe about it,,but yet,,they won't take it off?????

By far the best bang for your buck is getting a K&N air filter. It does flow better,,but the real advantage is being able to re-use it versus buying new fliters over the long term.

The problem is that there are no K&N filters that will fit in the stock canister of the M50. That forces the M50 owners to look at hyperchargers and thunder air kits. Even a 7% horsepower gain (claimed) does not justify me spending $300 just to add an extra piece of chrome on my M50. IMO, it's like spending $300 on a new set of pipes just to change the exhaust tone.

Hmm...no, that's not enough for me...from what I have read on here and other forums, people who have them claim a big performance boost, is this more wishful thinking then? Is there a gain on torque? I guess I need to do some more research. My buddy has a hypercharger on his Shadow 650 and swears it makes a huge difference...but his bike has less HP then ours.

Let's not forget the $280 trip to the dyno for the PC owners to go along with it!!!

Me...I'm just waitin' for the K&N to eventually come along. Then I'll take the Black and Decker to the stock air box. $10-$20 filter and a few minutes of my time and I've accomplished the same thing.

By putting pipes, and a fuel controller, that is about the best the bike is (notice I said about) going to be. That being due to futzing with the fuel map. Your biggest change is right there. As Sean pointed out. .8 ?? Nah...not for me. Any real gains are going to come from porting the intake manifold, bigger fuel nozzles, porting and polishing the heads, cams etc. Now you just spent a huge pile of dough on a 6K bike.

If you're a slave to vanity go ahead, drink the Kool-Aid, and buy the product. It can't hurt anything.......it's just WAYYYYYYY over-priced.

I love my setup and did notice an improvement; however, I changed my intake, exhaust, and added the pc3 at the same time. Obivously I should have noticed the change, but what really made the most improvement? <shrug> All three!

I feel faster therfore I am? hehe

I'm at a high altitude here so I've noticed that the bike isn't starvin' for air anymore, and with the re-map I notice how smooth my power band is now. I get more air when the engine needs it, so yeah it's a bit faster.

Waaaay overpriced you say? Yes, but I like my bike to look better then I do. (wasn't that difficult really. )
