Default Easy Brackets and Saddlemen Bags

Well, thanks to XtremeDave, I got my Easy Brackets (VOL-R1BR) and my Saddlemen Drifter Slant Extra Jumbo bags installed yesterday. They look good and weren't too difficult to install.

For anyone thinking about doing this, one major tip: when drilling the holes for the brackets, slip something in the inside mesh pocket (like a block of wood) of the bags, or your drill bit will likely chew through the mesh. I was thinking ahead and was doing this, but, while drilling for the first bag, the block must have slipped and the bit went through and tore up the mesh. Oh well, it still works fine.

The only thing that I have to do now is cut the bolts that hold the bags on a little shorter (Dremmel tool, here I come!) and then seal up the holes. The Saddlemen bags have adjustable yokes that hold on with four twist-lock tabs. The bags themselves have six holes for those bags. Since I'm not using the yokes, I'm going to seal up the holes with some silicone sealant. I'm also thinking about using some of this to cover the ends of the bolts so that I don't tear my hand off everytime I pull it out of the bag...

For those of you who are about to say that this thread is worthless without pics, here they are (and please don't mind the dusty nature of the bike):

Wow, those things are huge. If you can't get it in those, you better take the truck. Did you relocate your turn signals, or do the bags fit outside of them?

They are a little bigger then was expected, but I think that they'll work just fine. The brackets brought the bags out just far enough that they clear the signals, so I didn't have to relocate them.

I'm wating on delivery of the Ameritex bags I ordered to mount on Easy Brackets. I'm thinking that I might have to move my turn signals, becaus the bags are hinged in the front, and I might not have clerance to open and close the top without hitting the signals. I don't have a rear rack on my bike, so the brackets will be in a bit closser.www.accwhse.com/photos/ ameritex_futura00_sbag

True, without the rear rack, they will be closer to the bike. With the rack, they are quite close the the turn signals, but do clear them sufficiently.

I guess it all depends on how long your bags are.

I have the Saddlemen Extra Extra Jumbo Cruisers on mine (the next size up from Firedog).
The only thing different I did for mine was that I have a steel plate on the
inside of the bags so it has more support with the ez brackets.
Because the bags are so big, and when I was mounting the bags, the bike
was on the kick stand, the right bag does touch the rear turn signal, and after some time, of contact has left a permanent mark on the housing .
The left side doesn't touch the turn signal housing.
But I'll live with it for now...

I don't carry that much in mine, I just like a place to store my jacket when I'm off the bike, and carry a few emergency items. It is nice to have more storage for trips, but it's kind of like a garage, they are never big enough.

FireDog,

What did Xtreme Dave charge you for the bags and brackets? I've been trying to find a descent price for that exact setup.

You'll need to contact him. He wanted to keep the prices on the d/l... I can tell you that it's doubtful that you can beat his prices.

whoa,

I'll let fire answer you on those pegs but if you just want clearance from the bags you can take the pegs off, buy some stainless spacers and bolts (sorry I'd have to search for exact size) and reverse them. Left to Right, right to left. Clears most bags.

I got them from Scootworks. My wife likes them quite a bit. Her legs are long enough that, without them, she was feeling a little too compacted...

Unfortunately, I got them before I knew of the mod that Dragbar is referring to..

Here's a link with the bolt size. You can goto any home improvement store and buy stainless spacers vs cutting the pipe like the link says. My usual passenger has short legs so extending them down wasn't a good option.
