Default Hit Rev Limiter

I hit the rev limiter in 1st gear today ... on purpose ... cool! Wanted to find out exactly where the maximum shift should be by sound. Tach? We don't need no steenkeeng tach! I don't know about anyone else, but the bike just feels so much livelier after the fluid changes.

Didn't get down to the science of it. I was more concerned about the sound pitch of the engine so as to feel the shift points. In my race car(s) I rarely relied on a shift light or even bothered looking at the tach. I get to know my machine personally by "feel"; similar to how a good pilot doesn't have to fly by gauges. I want my eyes on the road ahead, not the speedometer. Good question though ... anybody measured MPH's for each gear prior to hitting the limiter?

just wondering (as a newer rider).... how do you know when you reach the limiter? My bike is starting to feel nice and broken-in at about 1300 miles, so I have started to "stretch it's legs" a little more, but i think i'm still babying it some

I never hit the limiter on mine until I put pipes and a fuel management device on it. With the stock setup you run out of steam way before the rev limiter kicks in, at least in my case.

Just turn the throttle all the way until the engine starts sounding like musical 16th notes,
(i.e. daaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa-dadadadadadadada!).

Nope, not gettin' a tach, but have different possible noob question though...

Case in point..and not that I do, but if continually pushed to the limiter right before each shift into next gear....wouldn't that be hard on the transmission? Just curious.

thanks.

I'm curious as to how many miles you put on it before trying this. I just did first oil change and don't plan on really pushing it until maybe the next one.

In second gear the limiter kicks in around 60mph. I've hit it, for me the engine lost power for a second, then I realized what happened and shifted. Wasn't watching my speedo, was looking in my mirror at the punk in the honda that just got dusted...

Let me say that you don't want to be doing this because pushing the engine to the limiter is not where your optimum shift points would be. You would need to dyno the bike and read the charts. The limiter is there to "save" the engine from over-revving and thus improve engine life longevity. In your scenario, the transmission will be fine if you shift smoothly.

I gave up on the "break-in" period around 100 miles. It was at a little over 800 miles and post fluid changes before attempting this.
