Default Suggestions

A friend and I are considering locations for our next bike trip. Originally we were considering maine, but have started discussing the smokey mountains area and a few other locations as far as colorado. We usually mix up the ride about 70% interstate and 30% back roads depending on how far we're going and how much time we have to get there (and back). We live near chicago in northern indiana and rather then just drawing a 1000 mile circle on a map and throwing a dart I figured I'd see what some of you guys prefer in your travel locations. Canada is pretty much out of the question as we went up there last year for a few days before all the new homeland security issues went into effect (at least until we get passports). Only thing we are adding to our gear this time is better communications. We got split up in cincinati one time and ended up taking separate vacations (LOL that's a story in itself). Guess i don't really care one way or another where we end up going it's always a good time. I'll be taking the S50 this time over the Rebel so I can carry a bit more gear and take advantage of a better windshield. Any suggestions are appreciated. thanks

edit: looking to be gone between 7 and 10 days.

My trip from last June is here. I can't offer much east of Wisconsin.

Thanks for the suggestions. We always go memorial day week. Events aren't that big a deal. We have gone to a few and frankly I prefer the road over walking around looking at bikes and stuff (unless I'm buying of course). S dakota looks really good, but may be a bit far for the time we have. Do you know if that motorcycle museam is still open in iowa? Last time I tried their link it was dead. Tenn is probably a bit more doable, but who knows. We always have a great time.

PS RowdyRed94, If you ever go east of wisconsin there is a great leather place called hudson leathers just across the ohio line off US 20. Not much past that until you get to PA. I travel northern ohio and indiana extensively and can also point you to some great places to eat (amish mostly) if you ever make it out this way.

Cool. Thanks S83. Looks like we're going to gatlinburg then heading east and south east from there. We'll check out as much as we can with the time we have.

I think two contingency plans are in order. One if it's hot, one if it's tolerable.

The Chicago area? Drive up to Milwaukee and just north of there, follow Lake Michigan. Drive into Michigan (there's a beautiful view from a bridge in Green Bay) and cross at Soux St. Marie (butchered it). From there, meander back down the other side of Lake Michigan. Take notes for all the things you want to go back and see again.
