Oh absolutely!!! This is my first new bike...i rode a 1990 EX500 for a season about 8 years ago....I'll get a season or two under my belt on the M (which i love and have no regrets on buying for a first bike) and potentially venture into a standard.... My father in law already told me i'll be receiving his '94 HD FXR in a year or two, so no need for 2 cruisers =]

Gas mileage on the 650 should be just a bit better than the "M".

The only place where the "M" might have an advantage over the Wee Strom, is in lugging, you will be able to run the "M" slower in high gear.
Agreed. The Wee will scoot. I call him Zippy for a reason. The maneuverability is absolutely Great!!!

A little late on this thread, but better late...as they say.
I too, am seriously looking at purchasing a V Strom 650. I currentyl own a 2007 M50 Ltd. Love the bike. My only regret is not looking into the V Strom more before buying my M50. I was curious then, but it is really appealing to me now. I really like what I've been reading on the Strom, and the versatility is enticing. Gonna have to sell the M50 though, as the Dealer wants to double his money on my trade in value.

If possible get a test ride on a Vstrom. The whole bike is a very different fit than an M. Wind up that puppy and enjoy the tranny. Just don't grab the brakes like you would on an M. The M can corner nicely in the twisties and sweepers but it will touch down sooner. The Wee bike corners very well for a price point bike and a fork brace will really inspire confidence with better than stock tires mounted. Since 2005 I have been riding the 650 with more grins every ride. The Vstroms, 650 or 1000 do not do anything perfectly but they do a lot very well. Tours, twisties, errands to the store, you name it.
