Not a parallel comparison. If you want to actually debate the physics of my statement, feel free. I dare you.

I rewrote this post 5 times, going between "F you!" and "Yeah, you're right posts" heh.

I'm not getting into it anymore.

You want to say that the reason I wrecked is that I ride a sportbike, fine, thats your opinion. I'd disagree with you, mainly because I was there, and I feel that were circumstances of the accident that kept me (with my limited skill) from ending it any other way. But whatever, I'm not here to get into a pissing match or nothing.

I don't believe I ever referred to your particular crash. It's not always about you, but what makes sense for most new riders.

Fair enough

Sorry, I jumped the gun there a bit, no hard feelings?

Hmmm, I have to agree and disagree on this one- sportbikes will indeed amplify a braking or acceleration error- but will not change anything as far as target fixation, leaning the wrong way and such that cruisers seem to get so bad in groups.

I just got a letter from Gieco with the breakdown of MC accidents- guess who is leading the crashes these days? RE-entry riders on cruisers!

A cruiser can, instead of amplifying the mistake, make it impossible to correct because of inferior braking, extreme wieght, and inability of rider to easily shift around on the bike.

So they each have thier drawbacks!

If you are on, say, a triumph rocket- well, you get it all that way- lots of braking and acceleration ability on an 800 pound plus bike!

Wow, this has been quite a debate, if I had known y'all were having so much fun on this subject, I would have chimed in sooner.

First Bike a 1970 350 Honda dual sport. I thought I could ride in the dirt with it,,,,,,, it was less painful than it could have been,,,,,,,, and it taught me dual sport really means it's not much good at anything.

The next month I bought a brand new H2. For those of you that don't know, it's a Kawasaki 750cc 3 cylinder, 2 stroke. (11 sec 1/4 mile bike) I was determined to break it in easy, but with about 40 miles on the clock, I gave the throttle a smidgen to much of a twist. I was trying to get out of the way of a car that looked like it was going to turn in front of me. Well that thing stood up on the rear wheel so fast, that I almost came off the back. I got it under control somehow, and didn't crash, but it was a real eye opener.

I don't really know how I managed to not crash that bike. Besides having a boat load of power, it also had a soft frame that caused it to shake something awful, at anything over 70 mph. Add to that the crummy brakes, and suspension, and it was a recipe for disaster.

Ok here is my question I have never rode a motorcycle in my life, been on the back of one maybe twice and that was a little scary for me. but i have a few friends who have bikes and im thinking very seriously about getting one their r two i like and i need some help i really like the 2007 Suzuki Boulevard S50 but im afraid that it might be two big or two much bike for me so ive also looked at smaller ones and i like the GZ250 but my concern their is ill pay for that and want to move up to soon and also my other reason is i live 35 miles from where i work and the gas prices it cost me 100 dollers a week to drive to work. and yes i do have the normal begginer stuff i am afraid of them, the last time i had my mind made up a very close friend got killed on his within a week of changeing from a honda magna to a ninja. well any way all yalls help would be great becouse i will use the reply to this post to make my decision on one of them two bikes or maybe another suggestion but i am fond of the Suzuki and remember i never drove one and i dont think they have one of them safty training classes around my area thanks

David gr8 2 hv u here punctuation is yr friend try 2 use it occasionally.

Unless you are living in BFE, there is probably an MSF course nearby. They even offer them over here where I live - they are offered by the automobile club, by my insurance company, and by companies owned by former motorcycle racers. You may have to travel a bit (the course I took in 2005 was about 90 minutes away - halfway across the country), but it's worth it.

The best advice about what kind of bike to get is ... start small. It doesn't matter if it's a cruiser or a crotch rocket, the secret is to start with a small, cheap, used bike.

David. This is an old thread, go to the Lobby, and introduce yourself. Ask your question there, you will get a much better response if you start your own thread, rather than hijack an old one.
Oh, and fill out your profile, so we can see where your from.

Wow, the bike with the pipes on the side with the cheesy chrome mesh that you could burn your leg on. I briefly owned a 1973 CB 350, good for learning on.

I rode a GZ250 in my MSF class, and I absolutely loved that thing. In fact, I almost went out and bought one even though I had a brand new Bandit 600 sitting at home in the garage.

I'd recommend looking for a used GZ250, or something equivalent. Ride it for 5-10,000 miles and then sell it to another new guy/gal so he/she can learn on it.

Also, it's good that you fear motorcycles. I think a fear of the machine leads to a healthy respect for it.

first ride was a 650 BSA - for two pblocks on the back wheel when i was 15. Doidn't ride again until late 30s - bought a used gold wing 1100 - a real comfy cruiser. Road it for 32,000 mile or so and learned how to ride by respecting it right out of the dealere's lot and listening to good friends - very few MSF courses in those days so I did it the hard - but slow and safe for me way. Stopped riding again ten years ago. Started again last year and went to Oregon version of MSF newbie course - a great program and my wife bought me a Honda VTX 1300 for Christmas!!! Road them all with great respect for the vehicle and the skills involved. I'm a great believer that attitude determines altitude and I've always treated those two wheelers with great respect. Maturity, maybe, colored by an experience my son had - almost killed doing everything right when he was 33 yrs old. Doesn't matter the size of the ride - match your size and skills to the bike. You've had some great advice from the old time riders on this forum - Good Luck and welcome aboard.
