Default Acid washing a gas tank?

I have a 96 kat thats got some rust in the tank. It has been a problem (replaceing fuel filters) cleaning carbs etc. I saw someone mentioning acid washing the inside of a gas tank to take care of this problem (on e-bay).
Has anyone heard of this? Is it a big project? Can I do it myself or do I need to take it in to have it done? If so how much will it set me back? Or is it even neccessary? Should I just keep replacng fuel filters? Thanks in advance for any and all replies!
