Unhappy Engine knocking?

Working on a 1990 Suzuki Katana 750 that I bough used (not running) about a month ago. Just finished reassembling the carbs and started it for the first time. It started strong but there is a noise coming from the lower half of the engine (crank-case) that is very inconsistent/intermittent sounds kind of like a small screw bouncing around in the oil. It does not sound too bad but it scared me enough to make me shut the bike off and now I am not sure what to do. I took the engine casings off and peeked around inside with a flashlight; everything looks nice and clean and I am not sure I want to start disassembling the motor just yet and I also don't want to take it in to the shop so soon. A friend has suggested that it might be a lose cam-chain.
Any ideas?
