Default Katana 600 dampener adjustment

The owner's manual for my 2003 Katana 600 describes how to change the dampener setting for the rear shock -- but it doesn't say how to access the adjustment ring. Judging from the picture in the manual it looks to be on the (rider's) left side. Where exactly is it? How much of the bodywork has to come off? Anyone have suggestions on the proper setting? I weigh about 130 lbs and ride pretty conservatively. The guy I bought the bike from weighed close to 200 lbs and may have put the dampener on a stiff setting -- the ride is pretty rough, especially over the frost heaves here in upstate New York.
