Exclamation Bike runs better half way between "on" and "prime" ????

Hello,
I'm new to this site and have a question for my 2002 Suzuki Katana 600. It has 7,600 miles. I took it on my first trip around the block today and after a mile, the bike acted like it was running out of gas. I had the valve on the "ON" position. It finally stalled on me so I let it sit for a minute then restarted the bike. I made it back home but it still acted like it was running out of gas.
After a few minutes stewing, I adjusted the valve between the on position and the prime position (half way in between both) and took the bike for the same trip. It ran perfect.
Is there something clogged? I had the tank off and replaced the plugs and checked the fuel filter. Only thing I didn't check is the filter that goes into the gas tank off of the valve. Could this be the problem?
