Default The AMF years

Can anybody tell me when the HD's were made by AMF? The reason I ask is I found a '93 Sportster XL 1200(?) for sale today, a special anniversary mod I guess. (1903-1993) Black and silver with some special badging.

Anyway, I was wondering if this was made by AMF....

Also, does anybody have any opinions, thoughts, experience, comments, on the '93 Sportsters?

Its got 12K miles on it, looks to be pretty clean. Some paint chips here and there, some oxidized aluminum. The engine is clean, and appears to be oil free externally anyway.

I didn't listen to it run, I didn't approach the seller, there was no price on the sign.

I thought I'd check in here with some folks who may know something I don't, about these bikes overall, before I talk to the guy.

Thanks in advance.

Harley merged with AMF in 1969. :
In Harley historical web pages it reads like this in 1981: "1981 On February 26, thirteen Harley-Davidson senior executives sign a letter of intent to purchase Harley-Davidson Motor Company from AMF. By mid-June, the buyback is official, and the phrase "The Eagle Soars Alone" becomes a rallying cry. "

Thats a good year and will last many many miles if you take care of it. All EVO models were made after HD bought itself back from AMF.

Yeah, nothing before 84, and even then the first year or two I might be a bit leery.

Friend of mine has an '87, clocked 30K on it w/ no issues other than a bad rear wheel bearing last year, which should have been replaced before that anyway.

Which kind of reinforces my "nothing before '84" concept?

A bad ball bearing? That could happen to anybody. Complete fluke.

I had an FXRS 1985 model, the second year of the evolution engine.
The only Harley I really liked.

I bought another new one in the late 1990's and I never liked it.
Didn't handle like the FXRS, just didn't feel right.
The FXRS has been out of production for a long time.

They way the "dollar situation" is right now Harleys should come down in price big time. If they don't it will be a ripoff.

My first Harley was the bagger version of the same bike 1984 FXRT. I got to agree with you on the ride, best handling big twin Harley ever made.
