I ride with a couple HD riders once in a while, one of them has been an HD owner since the early 80's, before it was the status symbol that it is now, at the time they just started to improve on their quality. He's never insulted me or the bikes I ride. I don't care if they call my bike a rice burner(I like rice, it tastes like chicken), jap crap, or what ever other names they have for my bike.
What's really laughable is to hear the "get a real bike" thing from people that have never ridden, which is who I've heard it from the most. Those who have been duped by the HD MOCO's marketing schemes, but have not the nads to get a bike themselves. I do most my riding alone, or with a small group, I'll do charity rides once in a while, but do not parade with the larger group as a whole, myself and the two or three others we ride with will leave some distance between us and the pack. "It's the way we like to roll"(to use a cliche)

Every once and a while, you wind up in a situation where you can put one of these jack holes in there place.

A few years back, maybe more than a few, I pulled the Honda I was riding into a parking spot next to one of these, I'm better than you types. He made a smart a$$ed remark about my jap crap being to close to his HD, than he saw that I was with a group of patch holders (I won't name the club), and changed his attitude, anyway, when he wasn't looking, I switched his kill switch to off. Later that night, when he was getting ready to leave, he couldn't get his bike started, so I walked over and said "let me show you an old jap trick" and I switches his kill switch back on, and said, try it now, I think it will work. Than I just walked away. Every one standing there got a good laugh at his expense. I don't know if it humbled him or not, but I sure felt better.

I've had someone try that trick on me once. I didn't realize that was the issue because I was having a frequent problem with my clutch start sensor contact on an older bike of mine, so it was sometimes normal for me to have to take the housing apart to short the sensor to start the bike. After that didn't work, I just happened to look up and see the kill switch was changed. Normally, I wouldn't touch anyone's bike, but the guy you did it to did deserve it.

All that big stupid talk remindes me of something that happened about 25 years ago at work, this 20 something (at that time) guy was complaining about something his wife had done, and some of the older guys told him that all she needed was a good wack in the side of the head. Than they went on to tell him how there wife's had done stuff like that early on in there marrages, but after a few black-eyes, they learned there lesson, and are good dutyful wife's now. Any way, this dummy doesn't show up for work the next day, turns out he belived all that big stupid talk, and went home, and slapped his wife around, so now he was in jail, than after he bailed himself out, his wife's brothers put him in the hospital, a year later he was divorced.
My point is, there are a lot of people out there that talk big, and it's very easy to rant, and rave on the internet, but there arn't many people that are stupid enought to fallow through on that kind of threat.

Rickster, well said. The scarey thing is, that guy (post orginator) was carring a conceiled weapon. I have a CCW permit but never carry unless I am out with the family in a place that could be unsafe. Alone, I dont carry it no matter what. I have Martial Arts training and if I can't do with my hands what needs to be done, then too bad for me.

I noticed that part about him being a permit holder too, so am I, but unlike you, I carry 95% of the time. It would never even cross my mind to want to shoot someone for sitting on my bike, unless it was with a squirt gun.

Now that would be funny, walk up to the guy and pull out a squirt gun and squeeze off a few shots in his face!

Default Hd?

Well if I had paid $15,000.00 for a bike that should sell for $9000.00 I would be picky about who I hung with too. They have to stick together to keep reassuring each other they made a valuable investment. Actually HD could give away the bikes and get their profit from all the HD merchandise they peddle ... i am waithing for shield and bar toilet paper. Actually even among the HD group their are levels of acceptability ..(note the lonely sportster 883 riders)

I did try a charity ride once .. in this county the dominant bikes are HD's ,, I was really ignored when i showed up with my old Honda GL 500 (now long gone and missed).. and it could out run the majority of the Wisconson Iron crowd.
I would be riding a HD now if when i was shopping for bikes a while back, anyone of the HD store salesmen had actally talked to me. Seems they were all to busy BS'ing with friends to pay attention to an old man with a pocket full of cash.. well the cash went to the Suzuki dealer that treated me like a human being ... and was just a very nice low key salesman... that had time

Davetnn, the C50 is a nice bike for a very nice price, good choice. I have some nice write-ups in mags on the C50 and M50. I had a good two years with my M50, I blinged it good. The C50 is much more of a touring bike and optioned up as such.

I have two Harleys and Gold wing. Here are some of my observations. Service and tires from my local dealer is about 1/2 the cost at the Harley dealer as it is at the Honda dealer. The tires wear out at about the same rate and the per hour cost of labor for other services is as I stated 1/2 cost at HD. Had a couple of warranty issues with bubbling or peeling paint on one of my HD at 25,000 miles; showed it to the dealer and new pre-painted parts were ordered and replaced, no questions asked. Trunk cracked on the Wing from under the dealer Mounted upon purchase CB antenna at 2500 miles. Had to take it in for inspection twice then await Honda rep phone call for determination. It is covered under warranty but why even a hesitation on that is beyond me. It's either the dealer or Honda's problem I didn't install it. Honda dealer will not install a tire unless I buy from their limited brand overpriced selection then charges $75 to mount & balance. Harley lets me bring in whatever I want as long as it's new and I have a receipt. They charge $66. for mount and balance if the wheel is still on the bike and $25 for carry in wheel.
GWRRA (Gold Wing Road Riders Assoc.) I attended one meeting. There were 10 or 12 people there. I was asked to introduce myself and the wife and tell of ride experience. I do own a Wing but when they heard I also owned two Harleys the bashing came up almost immediately. It seemed good nature at first but by the end of the breakfast it was serious. My wife said if I joined that bunch of idiots I would be on my own at their functions. And buying a Honda I got one year of the Honda Owner Group (red Riders) free. Good emergency trip services but no functions up here at all.
HOG (Harley Owners Group) Same small MT town but over 400 members. Average show at monthly meetings of 250 -300. Some type of event at least seven times a month year round. Dealer has free food and a band out front at least three times annually 5 to midnite. Poker runs. Every Wednesday evening dinner runs all summer. Three day weekend runs and overniters with any where from 15 to 50 participants on the average(these involve a couple or so 350-450 mile days, that Wingers claim HD riders can never do). 100 times the selection of accessories for your bike than Yam-Kaw-Suki dealers in four cities combined. Oh yeh, 10 % off any parts and accessories for local Hog members every day and 20% off sales on various rotating items monthly. (all leather one month, all chrome one month, all whatever) They catch everything at least twice a year. And while they do invite non-HOG members to most non-ride events but very few riding events is that as a local Hog member you have already signed an event liability release and the HOG event insurance is covered by National HOG for Hog members. That's why to attend MOST HOG sponsored events you MUST be a current HOG member. Most Yama-Kaw-Honda folks are not HOG members therefore not asked to participate unless the local dealer has paid out for additional event insurance.
Yeh yeh it's all a marketing ploy, but don't knock it. It works for Harley Davidson and about a few million of their customers. Quit whining and ride whatever ya want. I'll still wave at ya and stop along the road to assist if needed. I hope you could do the same.

Good post Moonrider… don’t do group rides and almost never seek out others to ride with so can't reflect on camaraderie or lack of it, but your dealer experience reflects my own… Metric stealers are generally nice enough but seem to see me coming and (perhaps because most are multi-brand dealers) don’t seem to know their parts catalogues remotely as well as the HD folks… that said, I usually avoid dealers of all kinds and order on line…

Bike on bike -- well one makes their choices…

Riders are riders… some know bikes; some are just in it for the “brotherhood” thing and feel they’re elevated somehow, by running down another’s scoot… Since my bikes are often on their way to becoming rat-bikes, I’ve developed a thick skin over the years, but I do have to chuckle at those acres of chrome bikes that meander around the landscape on a sunny Sunday afternoon, but you never seem `em on cool evenings, rush-hours traffic or in the wee-hours of the night… and rain, good grief – how do you think we get these never been down, never seen rain, low mileage garage queens – am so glad for poseurs; right now someone is polishing my next bike…

I think it was Mark Twain that said "JELOUSY IS THE TRUSEST FORM OF A COMPLEMENT", so, thanks for the complement! It doesn't really mean all that much, coming from someone so one sided, but thanks anyway. I see your from Tennessee, did you hear the one about the Tennessee hillbilly couple that were splitting up? Seems Billy Bob's main concern was whether or not him and Nancy Ann would still be brother and sister after the divorce.

Oh, by the way welcome to the forum.

Musta been turboed on nitros… Had a CX500 for ten plus years (my buddy still has it in his garage) and while the thing was built like a tank and as reliable as an old anvil, it didn’t have enough power to pull a hat off yer head – and had to be about the heaviest 500cc on the planet…

Hello All,

Bought my first bike in 20 + years and put 2500 miles on it in 3 months. HD Soft Tail Deluxe with more dam chrome than should be allowed but she is a looker...only big pain is I live in FL... if it ain't the rain its the bugs. Lots of polishing but worth it to me.

I wave at any and everbody on two wheels....guess I am just the friendly type...did learn the low wave after my first "Forest Gump" wave left me unstable. The oh yea my arm straight up makes a perfect air brake moment left me smiling at my enthusiasm.

As for unique presonalitites...what walk of life do we not see a person with attitude of some sort...for me I don't give them a second thought. I just ride, have fun, and I will own a bike, of any kind, as long as I can ride.

Current bummer is how much riding time I have lost because of the tropical storms and hurricanes which make it a little challenging on two wheels let alone four.

Have a Happy.

I don't think you'll see any real bikers at Runs unless it's their own. When it drops below 70 degrees the posers here in PA don't ride! It's pretty funnyl.

My guess is these people are brand loyal with everything. (reference previous Jordache jean wearers, Izod wearers and current Tommy Hilfiger wearers.) or they don't like any other bikes because they are not made in the USA (reference the jerks who I suspect dinged my car on more than one occasion with shopping carts because it's a VW.)

The ones who don't wave to me always seem to be older and have a lot more facial hair than I do. I assume they are riding HD's from the sound. I don't really pay attention to what their riding.

I'll just keep offering the wave and if I don't get one back, no big deal.

funny thing about HD riders i've rode past or met at a gas station / coffee shop...

all great people...
i have never had one not wave to me...

there's only a few that looked at me in the eyes and not wave (left their hand on their knee) and dissed me...
those were the custom chopper crowd...

i've had HD guys compliment my bike... could be i never ran into posers much...

Yes, a lot of the chopper guys think they are something special. I have had a lot of good experiences with HD ridders. I have been on rides by myself a few times and ended up with a group of HDs. They just welcomed me in and made me part of their ride. With me on a sport bike!
