My best friend's first motorcycle was an R1. He did ok and did not kill himself. The biggest problem is that he really hasn't learned to ride. The biggest advantage of starting out with, say an SV650, is that you focus more on how to ride the bike. You learn how to handle the bike better, how to carry more corner speed, throttle control, etc. The bigger, faster bikes make you focus on many more things and you tend to miss all the finer points.

If you are concerned with damaging the bike, get a used SV or something that won't hurt your feelings as bad if something happens to it. If you must go with the GSXR, just start slow as you mentioned. One thing that really helped me years ago was to do some track days. The most fun you can have with full leathers on and you really learn what the bike is capable of. There are track sessions for the first timers and you can get an instructor to help you out and give pointers.

I don't too many experienced riders that keep a bike more than a year or two. Most want the next latest and greatest. Besides, it is not hard to sell or trade most motorcycles and they tend to hold value well. So, not realy a big waste of money.
