Default need help diagnosing this problem on 2000 gsxr 600!!!

Hey, I just bought my first bike which is a 2000 gsxr 600. It has 20,000 miles on it. I rode this bike for two weeks now and have not had any problems until the other day. When I wind out the gears and hit about 11,000 rpms My bike just shuts down or gives out and backfires. It wont shut off though, I can switch the gear or engage at a lower rpm and I will be fine. It almost feels as if it is missing a spark or misfires or something. But the problem is only at the high rpms. I have had no problems besides for this. My buddy of mine looked at my bike the other day and we checked the spark plugs which were fine, checked the fuel filter and that was fine, checked the air box and that was all in tact and damn near brand new. He told me that he was stumped and didnt know what it could be. could this be a timing issue or no? Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks

I'm no expert but could it be related to the rev limiter?

I am not sure, because I was able to go above 11,000 rpms before. This problem just started to occur. Let me know more if you think that you know what is going on. Thanks a bunch.

Change spark plugs, failing that coil sticks.

the spark plugs were just changed not 1,000 miles ago. Could it be that the timing chain is loose? Or is it because of the sparkplugs do you think. Thanks a lot.

Were they gapped properly? A loos timing chain wouldn't be a problem until it started jumping teeth, and then you'd know it.

Sounds ignition related. If just one or two cylinders are cutting out it might be a coil. I believe this a distributorless coil per cylinder setup. If it cuts out totally it's something else in the ignition. Probably not the plugs either. The higher the r's the more load on the ignition, something is breaking down under load.

Does the tach immediately drop to zero when it happens? That's a sure sign it's ignition.

An independent tech will be cheaper but might not be as knowledgeable as a dealer tech or have access to factory info.

Sometimes you can chat a tech up on the side and get info that way. Usually with Jap stuff there's a common issue with specific symptoms and he can tell you what it is just from an accurate description of the symptom.
