Question the perils of powder coating

in my ongoing war against chrome (and other surfaces that involve lots of cleaning), i have given serious thought to purchasing this:
Craftsman 17288 Powder Coat System at Sears.com

has anybody had any issues with this machinery? or with powder coating in general?

any advice, suggestions, or other nuggets o' wisdom are appreciated.

Have powder coated many parts over the years - even my front fence!

Would choose this over paint any time.

No experience with home kits - I generally get my local guy to do it for me.
If I can give him a week, rather than wanting to come back next day - Much cheaper price!.
I also stick to common use colours. Then he can do it with another customers work - and he saves on time.

Years of wear in powder coating if done right.

I'm with you, I'm a card carrying member of the no-chrome militia...not that I prefer plastic, but give me a nice crinkle coat in black powder any day. I'd be interested in giving that little tool a go...I have'st seen it here, but then again it's canada...We're just getting hyper-color t-shirts and the laser disc

No harmful fumes, but don't use it in your home oven?

I am also not much of a chrome boy. I almost bought a Harley Street Bob that was almost all power coated. Sorry I did not mean to use the H word.
This may just be the way to go.

hmmm, I have my doubts about that thing. If you get it let us know if it was worth the money.

Our powder coat system at work is huge. With about an hour to process one peice if you wait for it to return to the same spot in which it was hung at. Though it has a manual booth and 5 automatic booths.

So it's hard for me to picture something like that.

You wont be able to put into an oven. You will knock the powder off.... You will be better off having a lamp system that can run up to about 450. I've never seen a system run under 470 however.

Dude, don't powdercoat the glass part of the mirrors, eh?

Believe me, i've got my doubts about whether this is going to work. But i think it will be worth the expense if it does. I would much rather take it to a professional, but around here they are just asking for too much cash. What finallly convinced me to try this is this site:
Riser's Powder Coating Trials

the biggest thing i'll probably coat is the mirrors.

Eastwood also has a powdercoating system. Actually, they have a couple of them. Eastwood Company: Auto Tools, Body Repair, Classic Car Restoration, House of Kolor Paint, Powder Coating

I watched a program (it may have been My Classic Car) where the guy demonstrated using the lower priced system. He did an air cleaner lid. He made a little rack to suspend it from and after applying the powder he put the rack into an old oven that he had in the garage. It turned out really cool. I haven't personally tried it yet but have been thinking of getting one. I'm not familiar with the Craftsman one.

If you do, please share your info on it, I'm sort of intrigued myself!

well, everything turned out pretty good. the powder coating tool is pretty darn easy to use, very little mess, and the coating is solid. the pictures show one of the o.e.m. mirrors coated, and a throttle boss.

also since i had the pair valve cover lying around, i tried to see if the "chromed plastic" would hold up during the curing phase. the answer would be no (see pic).

Looks nice. I looked at the eastwood site and watched one of their videos. Doesn't seem like a bad set up. Looks like your arent limited except for the size of what ever you are usuing to cure the powder.

What all are you going to coat on your bike?

well, my plan is to coat everything that's chrome, won't melt, and will fit in a standard size oven. i did just do the o.e.m. engine guards and they came out pretty nice.

the powder that i use is the matte black one from harbor freight.
