Default Discontinued Garmin & Wateringproofing GPS

So as I am researching to purchase my first GPS, two main questions have popped up:

1. How have folks "waterproofed" their non h20proof units? Generally I don't ride in the rain but I am planning a 3500 trip next summer...could I actually just rubberband a zip lock around it? I ask because the Zumo series is so freakin' expensive.

2. Speaking of $$$...what happens to support and update capabilities when a Garmin model is discontinued. There are some good deals to be had on such models, but i worry about updates and such. I'm interested in the compatibility with Mad Maps, so that's a possible factor. I doubt they would continue to support discontinued units.

Thanks.
