| I was wondering the best way to go about preping and painting my bike's farings. I have aquired some filler to take care of the deep gouges (thanks, plasticweld!), but what grit of sandpaper is necessary to rough up the paint and ready it for the filler and primer? What kind of primer is best? What type of grit for the primer? Thanks all!

| I'm no expert but my research on prepping surfaces for airbrushing (yes, I'm getting slightly into airbrushing) would be to start with a 600 to 800 for the first sanding if the surface is in good shape. Go with finer grit at each coat while wet sanding. Check airbrushing forums. A good one is airbrush.com but do use the search to not irritate the folks there.

| I used to paint cars for a lively, so I have a little experience in the field. I had a cbr600 that I painted with "house of Kolor" tangelo orange pearl. First I would sand it with say 220-320, then prime them with 2 coats. Then go back and hit it with 320 again to knock the orange peel from it...if not you don't you will see this in the paint! Then if you need too, prime again if you still have imperfections like nicks, and scratches. Next you will have to wet sand the primer with 400-600,....again make sure you have the orange peel out again. Then you are ready to paint. MAKE SURE YOU SAND EVERY THING GOOD! EXSPECIALLY THE EDGES OF YOUR FAIRINGS.........THE PAINT WILL START TO CHIP OFF, AND THEN YOU KNOW THE REST!. Email me if you have anymore questions, I will be more than happy to help you. routhsata@yahoo.com SATA X |

| be sure to use high-quality paints so it will not chip off easily. weather and scratches are 2 worsts paint's enemies so you have to take them into consideration. another, bear in mind the principle of compatibility and art. that way you can never go wrong...

| I teach auto body! I would recomend abrading the surface with 400 and water, if you are spraying plastic you may want to use a plastic primer, or you could check with any reputable autobody paint jobber. any finish sanding should be done with a no courser than 400 but finer is better. once the surface is prepped you will want to seal the the surface with a good sealer. now you need to decide what you are going to do, if you will be spraying a ground coat(metallic) now you will do that, next if you will be spraying and graphics or flames that will be applied next, then the wholle project needs to be cleared, I would recommend a high end urethane clear, no matter wether you use waterbourne or solvent based custom finishes. You can also get a lot of info on-line at www.bearair.com and www.autoaircolors.com good luck!!! Last edited by inland; 08-07-2005 at 08:15 PM. Reason: website address is wrong |

| Dastardly villain ![]() | Hey I am thinking about painting my bike and I was wondering where I could find the suzuki factory blue color other than the dealer, black and a clear coat as well. Anyone have any more tips? I wanna just respray my bike as I have a small crack in one fairing and chips everywhere. That and I want to put a graphic painted on the bike too.

| Dastardly villain ![]() | well, I talked to a pro painter yesterday when looking at a bike for my buddy. He said if I bring in every panel $700 for painting one color and clear. Dunno...I am thinking about it.
