I have read that alot of you will "rattle can" shoot a tank with lacquer or acrylic and then spend $100 or more for a shop to put on a clearcoat that is gas resistent because it has to have a Hardener mixed in to make it durable enough.............well, now there is a rattle can of both clear AND hardner IN THE CAN! all you do is activate and shoot! One is by a company called Aero-max with a can costing about $35. This works by the end user (you) actually breaking the barrier between the paint and the hardener with a special cap cover that is pressed into the bottom of the can. They claim that the total amount of paint as well as the pressure used to apply it is much greater than the average 'rattle can'. Another manufacturer is a company called Eastwood Company and THEIR can uses a "dual mixing nozzle". The "pot life" is about 24 hours and the cure time is about 24. their can is about $18. The third one is ALSA Paints which is made by the same German company as aero-max. I will say that their color selection is by far the most unusual and alot of them are available in can form.....at a $39 price tag. Now that may seems alot of bucks for a CAN but realize that a can of Hardener may run you $34 plus the cost of the clear or paint color. So, if you're just shooting a tank, it's well worth the cost - you don't have to buy much more than you'd use as well as having to set up your gun and compressor (if you have them). PLUS, there's most likely enough in the can to do yours AND several of your buddy's tanks at the same time. Get together, split the costs and everybody can have a nice paint job that will not drip off the tank if gas hits it. The BIGGEST thing about this is that you MUST wear protective clothing and a proper mask!!!!! Hardeners are now highly toxic ( read deadly) and many new painst contain isocyanates that CAN kill you......using these types of paints in an automotive setting requires that you have a complete protective suit with an external air supply! So, if you are willing to take the precautions necessary and do the right prep on your tank, you can get a super job for alot less cash than having a shop do it. Enjoy!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WilleyG |
