| Clunked into first gear ![]() | Looking for some nice roads around lake placid. Wifey and I are heading down there Sept 7 and staying 2 nights before heading home. We loved the area when we rode to the east coast in July but didnt get to spend much time in Lake Placid. We are gonna ride up Whiteface Mountain but what other roads are good to ride. Also, anyone want to join us? We are leaving toronto friday morning and crossing the border in Kingston. Brad

| Ok, let's start by saying that there are no bad roads in the Lake Placid area. My home town is about 40 miles from LP, it's one of my favorite destinations. There's lots of "loops" that you can run: Rt 73 south to Keene, Rt 9N north to Jay, Rt86 West through Wilmington, past Whiteface Mountain (Olympics), back to LP. About 50 miles. Or Rt 73 south, link up with 9N south and follow it to Elizabethtown, then Rt 9 north to Keeseville, Then 9N south again to Jay, Rt86 West through Wilmington, past Whiteface Mountain (Olympics), back to LP. About 90 miles. Or Rt 73 South to County rd 56 (I think, it's just south of the exit 30 underpass), to Mineville & Port Henry. Rt 9N south to Ticonderoga, the turn around and come backup 9N to Rt 22 to Rt 9 to Keeseville, then back to LP as above. About 150-160 miles. Or Rt 86 From LP to Saranac Lake, then Rt3 east to Plattsburgh. From there you can go south to Keeseville, then back by your route of choice (about 100-110 miles), or take RT 190 north out of Plattsburgh to Rt 11 west to Malone. Rt 30 South goes to Saranac Lake, then Rt 86 to LP. about 150+ miles. Or, if you want a ride, take Rt 86 to Saranace lake, then Rt 3 to Tupper Lake, from the Rt30 south to Long lake, then Rt 8 east (?) to Rt 9 north, which eventually gets to Elizabeth town or Keeseville, then back to LP as previously described. About 225 miles. All the above is 2-lane, no interstates So yeah, there's some pretty good riding to be had in that area. I'll probably have Saturday the 8th free...

| ... ![]() | i did a bit of a write-up about my 1-day ride in the Adirondacks in another forum. here's a copy-paste of it: ------------------ hmm, from Ogdensburg, i took 68 (quite nice scenery, good medium turns and nice rolling roads, VERY cool), then the 56 into the park itself (kinda boring), then the 3 towards Tupper Lake (quite nice), then 30 down to Blue Mountain Lake (nice after you get past the stupid construction and gravel roads at Tupper Lake). the 28 going from Indian Lake to Wevertown was so-so, some parts quite boring, others a bit nicer, but nothing that stands out. Interstate 87 north is boring, as expected. the 73 and 86 that go from I-87 to Lake Placid and Saranac Lake are very nice! nice curves, uphills, downhills, etc. there was one REALLY nice section of 73 that runs right along a river, so water directly on your left, rock face on your right, and the road just kinda stuck along the edge - good visibility! if memory is right, it's the section of 73 just west of Keene. from Saranac, i took the 86 and 30 north through Malone to the bridge at Cornwall. by then, it was getting kinda dark and chilly, which was fine cuz i was focusing on staying warm and there wasn't much to see anyways. i ran into a local dude who said that the road from Long Lake to Blue Ridge (28N and then a smaller side road, looks to be the 2) is nice and twisty. i didn't go check it out since it would have been a lot of backtracking and it was 5:30pm, so sun wasn't about to stay out much longer up there. next time! he also suggested taking the 86 north from Lake Placid to Whiteface Mountain. there's a place called North Pole and Santa's Workshop along that route, too! toll road for Whiteface, and not likely to be open at the hour i would have been there at (around 7:30pm) so, again - next time! ------------------ |

| I just got back from there ! The nicest part of my journey was from Lake George on 9N up to Whiteface then a long 86 to Lake Placid . 9N was a beautiful ride, especially the section leaving lake George.

| Right now, it looks like I should be free either day that weekend (8th-9th); long range weather says Sunday is the better of the two days. I'd be glad to meet up with you and show you around. Just let me know how long you want to ride

| Are you only asking M50 riders, or should this be in the events forum?

| I'm on a C50, so... "event" makes it sound so formal; how about "some people going for a ride"?
