Default Rm250 1990 2-stroke Many Questions?

Hello...i am brand new to this hobby and have many questions...please help if you can...thanks in advance....

I just got a 1990 rm250 2-stroke in fair shape.

This bike has a big bore kit in it according to the dealer that sold it to me. What exactly is a big bore kit, and does it add much power?

Next question is, should this bike be able to idle, and if so, can I just play with the carb settings?

Final question is, any tips to make this bike start easier. I am 5'9", 190lbs and just don't have the leg strength to get it to start. My buddy came over and he got it start fairly easy for him, the only way for me to get it going is to roll it down a hill.

Thanks alot for helping.

Give it a little throttle at the same time you kick your bike over. Yes, you can get a 2-stroke to idle but I wouldnt let it do that for an extended period of time. Big bore kits adds more cc's to you motor making it larger than 250. So yes, it will be more powerful as long as its been well maintained and done right in the first place (which is obvious).

How mechanically inclined are you for fixing things, ie cars etc. You started in the right place, reading an online forum. Just browse through the posts and go as far back as you can tolerate. Youll learn alot this way. Read, read, read. Dont be afraid to ask questions. And always expect someone to tell you "get a manual for your bike dude".

The best advice I can give you is order the Genuine Suzuki Shop Manual and as was stated Read everything in it! Your bike will idle once you have the carb cleaned and adjuste properly. this is where the manual becomes a huge help to you. My RM250 idles just fine. As far as starting it, I use the kickstart to position the piston at Top Dead Center and then give it a real hard kick and it usually fires on the fisrt or second shot. Just be carefull with your new machine as it will be a lot to handle for a any rider let alone one with minimal experience. I have been on Dirtbikes since I was a little boy and at 39 years old I still show my RM250 the respect it demands. Take it easy on your bike and the speed will build up over time.. Most of all ENJOY a great sport!

THANKS GUYS....i do have a manual ordered for it....i have done carb work, replaced an axle in a 4 wheeler, some brake work, so I do hope I can work on this bike. When I do get it running, it runs very good...i am very surprised at how much power it has...it is very, very powerful....considering its 15 yrs old too.
