Default 02 RM 250 trouble at high speeds

been having a lil trouble with my bike recently. I went riding one weekend the bike ran great. i put it away and it sat for a week without being started. i went back to ride it and the plug fouled after about 5 minutes of riding. I got a new plug and it rides fine at low speed but as soon as i open it up it starts sputtering and falls on its face at 3/4 - open throttle. The manual says to adjust the exhaust valve, re gap the plug, or adjust bypass valve( and several other things) my question is what should i do first? yeah i know im lazy but i just dont feel like risking adjusting something that doesnt need to be adjusting and having this whole problem snowball on me. any help is appreciated. thanks!
