Question RM 125 Clutch Question

Hoping someone on here can help out.

My son just picked up a '05 Suziki RM125. Don't know all the particulars (he lives with his mom), but I think the bike had been sitting idle for some time.

Anyway, he rode it briefly on Christmas and said it ran fine. He then had to park it for about a week.

The next time he went to ride, the clutch would not dis-engage. Put it in gear and the bike jumps forward and dies (of course, right?). So the next time I'm there, we pull the case cover off that covers the clutch lever (left side of bike), start the bike up and I use a pair of channel locks to move the lever into what should be a clutch disengaged position. He puts the bike in 1st and it jumps forward and stalls.

Any suggestions as to what we should look at next?

Thanks

Most 2 strokes need to be in nuetral to start with out the jumping forward. Thats just a common thing. Try starting it in neutral and if its still ahving problems, sounds like the cable might be rusted (But on a 05' seems kinda weird) which id bring it in under the warrenty.

Need to take clutch apart and clean the steels and friction plates.
Scuff them off with some fine sandpaper ( 320 grit ). Wash the
parts off with brake parts cleaner, available from Wal-mart. Then
take the friction plates and soak them in oil over night and put
the clutch back together. Be sure to check the cable adjustment,
and ride it. Temporary fix is to lean the bike over on the stand so
the rear wheel is off the ground, rev the engine a little, kick it into
gear and rev it enough to keep it running while you ride the brake.
The drag of the brake will break the stuck discs free and the clutch
should work fine until it has sit for awhile.

Stuck plates seems to be the consensus from what I've heard here and elsewhere.

One question about the clutch springs. What/s the torque rating for tightening them? Is there a tightening sequence or is tightening them in a star pattern ok?

Thanks y'all

on a 2005 would the clutch plates need that though? Id bring er in to where he got it and have them mess with it. Since its brand new they'll take care of it.

Folks, I'm sorry. I fat-fingered the year. It's an '02. Big difference, uh?

Anyway, I spoke with the previous owner today and he said he as already replaced the friction plates and springs it the bike once.

I'm going to try break the plates loose and see what happens. If it happens again, I'll pull the clutch apart and check the basket for wear marks/grooves that the plates might hangup in.

i just bought a new 03 125 and i had the same problem yesterday. Not sure what it was. When the dealer rode it to my truck it seemed to work fine but i get home and start it up and pop it into first and it jumps and then stalls. I tried it again giving it throttle while i switched to first and it jumps a bit but doesnt stall.
