Default Pricing for a new drz400s

This will be my first time buying a bike new. Is there any place I can find the invoice price for this bike? Can I even hope to get the bike for less than msrp? Also, what about the destination and prep charges? I was thinking of going to a few dealers and asking for there best pricebut they might just give me the sticker price and hope I fall for it. If any one with experience can help it would be greatly appreciated.

last year I purchaced a new left over 2003 Suzuki DRZ400S for $4395, have 5K miles, no problems, my suggestion is if you're planning some long road trips, this is the wrong bike, but if you're planning to do mostly off roading, its the best bike you can get, the bike isnt comfortable for long, high speed road trips, it is more than capable of going 90 mph, but ur butt will be sore and you will be worn out physically after about 1 hour of non stop road riding. This bike is designed for short road trips just to get somewhere u can ride it off road. If you're planning on doing more road trips, get the DR650, but you can't beat the 650 off road like you can beat the DRZ400, one good thing about the DRZ400 if you dump it, its light enough to pick up, with the DR650 you are going to need help getting it back up. You can ride the DRZ400S just like any motocross bike, jumps, hill climbs, keep up and even pass the best MX bikes, can't do that on the DR650. Im finding myself doing more street riding now, and was thinking about trading it in on a street bike, but my dealer only wants to give me $3K for it. My friends have street bikes and they don't want me to tag along cause of my bike, i can keep up with them, but they are embarressed to be seen with my bike, can't pick up hot babes with my bike, need a Harley to do that.

I had the DR650 and regret trading it. It has extra tall gearing. The bike needs 2 less teeth on the front sprocket or 3-4 teeth extra on the back sprocket, or a combination thereof. The bike is capable of about 14.4 in the 1/4 and a reported top speed of about 110. The bike is just a bit heavy for prolonged dirt riding, but can do most anything you ask of it, especially climbing non-technical hills. Slap on the gel seat for about $150 & you can ride for hours. The ride is great. Seat height is also shorter on the 650, more so with the gel seat. The 400 is the best all-around bike, with more of a leaning toward the dirt than the street. The 650 has more of a leaning toward the street & fire roads. Just thought I'd share my perspective. I've always stuck with Suzuki for the dual sports.
Regards
Steve

Hey, I'm also in the process of weighing used vs. new DR400S. I'm in Denver/Boulder area and the dealer says he's asking $5800 for fully factory ride but maybe if I'm nice, I can get out the door for $6000. Last I looked, I think MSRP was about $5500. I found a used one with 500 miles on it for $4200obo, so I'll check that out first. A few questions come to mind:
1) Is the gel seat sold for the 400? How about some kind of windscreen.
2) If I go used, I was planning on having the seller bring the bike to a dealer and let them go over it and ride it to help assure it's good quality. Different advice out there?

Nice site and thanks for any help!

Rob

Also,

Anyone know the difference between the 2004 and 2005 DRZ400S.
And is it worth taking off the starter to save weight? (assuming I can figure out how to start the thing reliably).
