| I just got an LT50 quad for my son. Its approximately an 86, and needs work. I have a few questions about the oiling system. It has an oil pump, in the right side cover. Im not sure if its working or not. If I chose to mix the oil with the gas, would the bottom end still get lubricated? It seems to me that the oil gets pulled through the crankcase somehow, where mixing it with the gas wouldnt do the same. In the transmission section, what type of oil do I use? Will 10w30 automotive be OK or does this need heavy gear lube? Thanks to all who reply. |

| The pump may be air bound. There is a small bleed screw on the pump. Open it slightly while holding the bike upright. The gravity will bleed the air out. If you want to know if it is working attach a clear tube to the inlet on the pump. Once filled with oil run the bike for a few minutes and see if it pumps out. Before you do this make sure to add a bit of oil to the gas tank just as a precaution. You can run pre-mix if you like as it will lube the bottom end crank and bearings but I would try and get the pump running anyway if possible.

| Thanks. Thats exactly what I was thinking-a little pre mix oil in the fuel just for safety while I confirm the pump. Does anyone know about the oil in the case? It seems that its only for the "transmission" portion but Im not sure. My local dealer wasnt too helpful. |

| Sorry I forgot to answer that part. Use a good motorcycle gearbox oil as it has a higher sheer point than standard motor oil. This is not to say you can't use standard oil in the gearbox though. The gearbox is totally seperate from the crank/cylinder portion of the motor. The intake mixure (fuel/air) is what lubes the crank and cylinder. The gearbox oil stays in the gearbox, unless you blow a crank seal which will let the motor draw oil from the gearbox. |
