Default Off-Road helmets on road?

Most of my riding these days is on road on my DR-200. But I am still wearing my Fulmer Off-Road helmet and Scott goggles. I always always wear my helmet but I'm not sure if I should get a regular fullface, or if mine is O.K. for road use.

Thanks, Ross

Is it DOT or SNELL approved? If so, it should be ok....

It is DOT. It has to be to be produced.

You're off-road Fulmer of course as you said is DOT approved. I have one. Now I've never seen the Fulmer's not Dot approved. They sell them at the local Renegade Classic Store here. During the colder months though they will let more air into the helmet so you're going to get a bit chilly in it. I noticed that my helmet shakes when I get gusts of wind going along about 60mph.

So for hot days I use my off-road helmet..but with the colder months I'll use one of my less expensive full-face ones.

Yup as long as it has proper approval, no problem. The off-road helmets have that extra space in front of your nose/mouth area for easier breathing, but as far as the safety issue goes, it's as good for protection.

In fact, a lot of people wear off-road helmets on the road here.

Well, what you are using (I assume its a half-face helmet) is better than nothing. However, I don't think it is a good idea. If you fall face forward, how well does that work on asphalt. When I ride dirt on my YZ450f, I use a fullface dirt helmet w/scott goggles (its much lighter than a street helmet--that's a practicality issue--you couldn't ride dirt very comfortably in a street fullface helmet). The dirt helmets don't offer as much protection, but the need to be lighter and breathe--b/c you sweat more in dirt as well.

I wear a Shoei RF1000 fullface when on my Gixxer. Afterall, if you fall or get hit in the street, you will more likely suffer greater injuries on asphalt and from other cars, than you will on dirt (unless you make a habit of flying into trees). Just MHO, I want the best equipment for the type of riding I am doing.

Oh, the Scott goggles are fine, but they would probably bug me on the street b/c I don't need that level of adhesion to my face to keep on sunglasses or best yet, just using my visor. Then you got to cary them or stow them, another hassle (Scott Goggles ain't cheap). Street full-face just put on helmet holder, lock and go.
