Default RM250 Won't Start

I have a stupid question. I have a 95 RM250 that I picked up very cheap because the previous owner took it apart to clean it up and re-powercoat the frame, or at least so he said. He ran into a money crunch and sold it to a friend of his who had plans to get it going but never did. Anyway, during the process many parts got lost, including the pipe. I have re-assembled the bike, they gave me a new top end kit with it, but the piston in it looked fine so I sealed it up with new gaskets. I don't have a pipe for it yet but have tried on a couple occasions to start it without success. I am thinking one of 2 things. It could be due to all the 2-stroke oil I used when re-assembling it (it shoots out the exhaust port on every kick), or it could be that it doesn't have a pipe. I know 2-strokes need the pipe but wasn't sure if they will run at all without them. Could this be the problem?

Your best bet is to get the bike back to a complete state and then attempt to get it started. Yes the engine needs back pressure to run.

I ended up getting it started without the pipe. Decided to do a little diagnosing and found out there was no spark. Took the tank off to inspect the wiring and I had pulled one loose when I mounted the tank. Got the wire connected, it sparked and fired off on the first kick.

i will run with out the pipe but it will run veryy crappy. but you might need to push start it cause u put oil when putting it back togerther. after you push it a while it will sputter and start then get a pipe for it.

all I have to say is that is not very smart to run the bike without the pipe the pistion will get caught in the ports and do unrepairable damage it will run but not good also it will burn the top of the pistion and that is not good also
good luck on finding a pipe and I hope you have fun on your new bike
