i have yet another problem with my (not as trusty as it used to be) 1980 ts185, and its kinda hard to explain, anyway, as far as i could see it wasnt not firing properly, it runs 500 odd rpm at full throttle. (you can count out loud every time it fires) ive checked the whole fuel system, jets, carb etc and nothing was rong, this problem only started after it ran for a while at continuous revs,im i have no clue whats happened and i dont feel like filing through the electrical system at this stage of its long life, any help appreciated, thanks,

It sounds like the reed valves or their rubber gasket seal are worn out. They may not be closing properly. Does the carb have any 'blowback' (i.e spitting fuel back out through the carb)? You will need to take the barrel off to check them.

thanks mate, i got new reeds for it, got a huge shock, down here in aus they still make em after 30 years whish must say sumting about my choice af ag bike

No worries mate.
I have a 1984 TS185 that kicks ass. The 2004 model is no different except for a few changes in the lights (for a road going version). These are great

yes the old TS' are great bikes. its good to be able to talk to people who have them

I have a 1974 TS185 with 5400 original miles. I have owned it since 1982 and haven't ridden much since 1992. I am having the carb cleaned and a few things done to it so that my Grandson can ride. It is a great bike!

As was said cracked or worn reeds can cause this....If you find you still have a problem here are a few simple things to check.

Change to a new plug cap only costs a few dollars
Check your CDI as they sometimes cuase missfires
have the ignition coil tested to make sure it is 100% functional.Some may spark but the spark is only 70% of what it should be cuasing a missfire symptom

I believe it is in the electrics not the carb but I have been wrong before
