Does it still have a decent compression ? I hardly think it's the carb, I mean have you ever seen the crude contraptions on early (1920's) bikes ? Man, they run without a carb, just holding the fuel line to the intake, pinching it with two fingers to adjust the mixture. |

Its very hard for anyone to be able to give you accurate advice over the net however based on what your saying, it sounds to me like its a carby problem. The fact that it starts and runs for a short period indicates that the spark and plug is OK and also eliminates compression problems....... well in so far as there is enough compression for the bike to start. I had a similar problem with our 97 RM250. I removed the carby and cleaned it from top to bottom with carby cleaner and also checked the float needle and seat and also the float level. In my case it was a Keihin carby so I visited there site and got the float level measurements for my specific model. As it turned out, the problem for ours was in fact due the bike having been left unused for periods of months between uses. As you know, your fuel is mixed with oil and when the fuel evaporates it leaves the oil which over time can congeal and build up to form something which resembles a very fine silicon type substance which had then gotten lodged in one of the jets. In your case you mention that there is no air filter..........that is not a good thing as it means that whenever your bike is running that it is sucking unfiltered air directly through the carby and into the motor. Any gunk that is sucked through can cause damage to the engine, in some cases catastrophic damage resulting in seizure. My guess is that running the bike without the filter has allowed some fine particles to get inside the carby and are lodged somehwre in one of the jets or alternately in one of the small passages inside the carby. When the bike is left for a bit the particle drops down but when you attempt to accelerate the pressure inside the carby causes it to be sucked back up and blocks again hence causing the loss of acceleration etc. Solution is to remove the carby and then the float bowl. If you are not familiar with how a carby works then take particular note of how everything goes together before you take it apart..........draw pictures if you have to........the last thing you want is to not be able to put it back together again or put the floats in upside down. Using carby cleaner clean that carby inside and out so it is absolutely spotless including each of the jets and spraying up into each of the passages. Its also a good idea to use compressed air as well as that will often blow even the toughest grit out. When you are 100% satisfied it is 100% clean.......put it all back together being careful not to allow any dirt back in. Put it back on the bike and get that filter problem sorted......... that screw is probably a $2 part at your nearest Suzuki dealer. While your at it, I would remove the air box and completely clean it inside and out as well to ensure there is no gunk left in it that can be sucked in later or dislodged and allowed to get in when you do the filter. Hope that all helps. Good luck. |
