It must be done. The fact that you're charged for it is probably because the cost of service in different markets differs. As such, for Suzuki to just "throw it in" would hurt certain dealers. Or hurt the bike buyers by making them pay for it in the base price of the bike. Or hurt the "mechanically inclined" by forcing them to pay for something they have the skills/tools/facility to do themselves.

It won't void your warranty unless the bike suffers damage from NOT having been serviced. No dealer can force you to use their shop for routine service by denying you warranty service if you don't. That's illegal. You can do your own service work, but you should setup a check list of items listed in the owners manual that need to be covered, hand check them as you do them, sign, date and list the odometer reading when you do the service, and keep any receipts for oil and filters.

In the real world, very few dealers will even ASK about the bike having been serviced, and by whom, as most warranty coverage is for parts failure, not lack of service, and in most cases, servicing the bike at given intervals or not would not have contributed to the failure of the part.

You can buy a lot of tools and a manual for what you'd pay to have an underpaid, disgruntled 19 year old service your bike at your dealer.

If at any time in the future, your dealer tries to deny you warranty service on a bike that you have done your own servicing over, report him to the corporation.

The warranty is against defects. Scheduled maintenance is not correcting a defect, it's just taking care of the bike you bought - like having oil changes done to your car.

True, but a valve adjustment on a 600 mile new bike shouldn't be in the same league with an oil change. If Suzuki is so concerned that the valves may need adjusting at that interval, then they should spring for the work. Not to mention to leave it up to the dealer as to how much he can fleece his customer for. You don't do that with a new car; why a new bike? I had mine done at 600 miles, and the service manager said that all of the exhaust valves were tight. Now about 500 miles later, they rattle like a b*tch. I called him and he acted like if they needed it again, it was on me again, that the only time the warranty covered anything was if something actually broke. Piss on him. I talked to the SM at another local Suzuki dealer, and he said they could give it a listen and test ride if I could get it by there sometime. After we talked about it, I told him "I guess I could just ride the sh*t out of it until it compeletly breaks, then Suzuki can fix it under warranty". He laughed and said "that would work too". I think it's a scam to begin with, and I think the dealer who adjusted mine last time should do it again at no charge. It was their service department that failed. Sorry about the rant. It just pisses me off. Guess I'll have to get a manual and do it my damned self from now on.
