Default Vs 1400 Front Cylinder Backfire

Hello everyone, I am new to the site and have one thing to say INTRUDER'S ROCK!!!!, Ok now that I got that out I have a real question...
I have a 93 vs 1400 intruder (my baby) that started running rough and then quit running on the front cylinder... I pulled the carbs apart and cleaned them both thourghly (the front carb had a red Powder like substance in it???)
put them back together and put the bike back together, ran it and it now would fire on both cylinders but got a case of nasty backfire from the front cylinder so I tore the carb back apart and cleaned it again even though it was spotless. and I took the slide and diaphram out and replaced them because the diaphram was shot... thought for sure that was the problem but when I got the bike back together it did the same thing This all took place in about a years time due to time and money constraints as well as the winter season so the bike did sit for a while but anyways I am now stuck wondering if it could be a sticky valve or what ???? Please help!!!

How many miles on the bike? Have you checked the plugs. You could have a fouled plug. Generally, if it is backfiring out the exhaust that is a sign that the carb is running too rich. Have there been any exhaust modifications on the bike? Also, have you changed your breather filter? It could be starved for air. Next time you have the tank off, flush it out just for good measure.

The bike has 31,000 miles, I am running cobra exhaust (since it was new) full not just slip ons... I changed the plugs last year, pulled them a couple of days ago and cleaned them, the one I am having problems with had allot of carbon on it. I cleaned and oiled the air filters but don't know whrere the braeather filter is so any help there would be good...
Thank you

I should add that it pops and backfires at an idle and at low throttle locations. when I open it up it seems to be a bit better

Thumbs up

The adding of pipes, if done without re-jetting can creat problems.
Low and medium range are the areas where manufactures meet EPA controls. When doing exchaust pipes, jetting and aircleaner should also be considered.
If you read thru some posts here re intake fuel injection and exchaust pipes, you will begin to grasp the effects of each. Where for FI, remapping or management system s/b done, for carberation rejetting is done.
We have some good people here who will give you assistance. Local shops are, in most cases, able to explain it and offer options to you.
Welcome to the forum. Good luck

When you pulled the front plug, if it was wet with fuel, your carb is running rich. If it is dry carbon, it sounds like a ring problem as the combustion chamber is burning oil. I reckon I'd check the compression on the cylinder to rule out a ring problem.

Ride the bike for 20 minutes or so then park it and pull the plugs. That will tell you if the bike is running rich or lean. I suspect it is still running a little rich. Does it backfire out the exhaust when you are riding. For example, when you are accelerating and shift gears, does it backfire while the clutch is engaged?

loading up the carb maybe???? Dumping extra fuel in it and then when you shut it off it has to burn that last bit of gas.... maybe check those plugs like O.G. said,,if they are wet then richness could very well be the problem,, it might be dumping just enough extra fuel into it so that the heat causes it to maybe explode in the pipes,,,hmmmmm,,,just a guess,,,what do you think O.G.?????

Default Header flange bolts

Check your header bolts, for any loose ones, look at the pipe where it come out of motor to see if there is any exhaust leaks.
