| Hello! I've got oil and grime on the drive side of the tire rim . I'm told it's the final drive oil seal and was told buy a dealer here it would take 4 hrs. labor! Is this something that a novice mechanic with the repair manuel can tackle? Thanks for any help or suggestions. Monte in Texas |

| macnmm, call it what you like ..all I see is with the amount of hits I got and the 2 following post there would have been someone who could have offered something!! Even if directed to another site! Somebody's not standing around with a wrench in hand! I guess I should have posted 135lb married woman who needs advice on what bike fit's!!! Nothing like being reputious in your answer's...... Just my opinion..later

| I'm confused? You join on 3/21 and post two more replies on 3/21? An you're upset because you didn't get an answer on 3/21? Maybe some/most people are at work? Maybe everyone can't get on the Internet at work and browse and chat at anytime they have the desire because they would be fired? Maybe you expect too much? Maybe instant gratification?

| Yes, if you are somewhat mechanically inclined it is a job that you can do with the manual and a few hand tools. However... (don't you hate those?) for the 4 hours labor that the dealer will charge it may be worth it. I don't have a manual in front of me here, but if I remember correctly you have to remove the rear fender to gain access to the final drive assembly. If you have bags and a backrest that adds more work, and I can tell ya that without a bike lift (a lifting table that will raise the bike up to waist level) you will be working at nearly floor level for much of the job... I hope your wife is a good masseuse. Your lower back will not be happy with you. If nothing else go to your local tool supply house and buy one of those roll-around seats with the shelf on the bottom to hold some tools and parts. Best investment going for the home bike mechanic. While you are there you can get a bike jack/lift for about $60 that will lift your machine some and hold it level while you do your thing. One more thing, I personally don't drink espresso in the wee hours of the morning. It makes me cranky and I cannot sleep well. Hope this helps,

| Hey thanks wsharp... I have the lift and a milk crate and I'll have the tire off anyway(time for new rubber) ,so I'm going to take a look inside. Another mechanic told me today that it could also be the bearings bleeding from being overpacked. Does'nt put any grime out on tire on short rides in town ..only on the 100+ trip. Also the gear fluid is up where it should be. Does the bearing grease sound fimiliar. Oh! and I'll show more patience next time !!!! |

| If you will have the tire off you are more than halfway there! I just had my local dealer put new Dunlop Wide Whitewalls on my 1998 and I notice specs/spots of lubricant on the hub now. I have cleaned them a couple of times but they have come back. Not a lot, mind you, but enough to be noticable by me. If it continues after this cleaning and does not diminish I will be going in to see where the source is myself. Hopefully when you get in there it will be kinda obvious what the source is for you.
