I looked at it. Thanks for the tip to look at it. And it is a s40 not m40 as I had asked.
One question: What do they mean by 'thumper'?

The S40 or Savage is a single cylinder engine and the exhaust makes a thumping sound, thus the name. The Savage is a really nice bike. It has a lot of zip and will run highway speeds all day.

I almost bought one last year for my first bike. I would have got it, but I was too big. I don't think Harley, Honda, Kawasaki, or Yamaha have anything close to it in that price range. Under $4,500 for a new, competent, high-quality, Boulevard cruiser?

One warning: there's a small chance you may "outgrow" the S40, depending on your size, riding ability, expectations, etc. But I wouldn't worry too much about that. Go with what you feel comfortable with. Some of my friends said I would soon "outgrow" my Intruder VS 800 and that I'd want an S83 in six months. They were dead wrong: I liked the 800 in the showroom and I like it even more now.

The single cylinder S40/ Savage is a good, solid bike. Nothing spectacular, but a good, reliable, mild-mannered bike to start out on that is large enough to carry an adult without looking like a toy. They vibrate a lot more than a v-twin, and they are rather small compared to most cruisers, so most people who get them want a bigger bike in a year or two. Save yourself a bunch of money and get a used Savage (same bike pre-2005 name change) and pass it on to another new rider next season when you are ready for a new S50, M50, or larger cruiser.

I just got my S40 and love it. The guys are right though, if you plan on riding for many years (don't know your age) you will probably out grow it. I am 55+ so for me it is a good choice. Lots of country roads where I live and enough small towns to cruise for miles with very little traffic to contend with. Good luck
