Default 1992 Suzuki Intruder

I get about the same miles per tank with my 1992 Intruder 1400.

About the best I ever got was 48 miles per gallon. Usually I get anywhere from 40 - 45 miles per gallon, depending on how many starts and stops and if I'm riding double.

My bike only has 4 speeds. I'm assuming yours is a 5 speed. I thought a 5 speed would get better mileage.

Any idea how much mileage Savage would be giving?

I don't have a number based on experience, but I know the 5 speed Savage version was rated for 50 miles/gallon.

Ok, I got some real life numbers from my Savage.
Brand new 2003 Savage, one rider, mixed city and highway (under 50 mph) at outside temperatures of 40 F on relativelly flat land, done on a 100 km trip worked out at 47 mpg.
After 2500 km, when the bike will be broken in and the outside temperature will go up, I think the mileage will improve, but still is not very bad.

Hi guys, this is what I get on my bike (02 Intruder VS800-3.4 gal tank)
which is the same size as the 1400, on the hwy I get about 35 miles to the gal, that would be about 119 miles to the tank. My bike has 5 speeds and I ride single. That would be the max running the tank empty which I don't recommend. Don't know is this helps but you asked.

I get 35/38 on my 98 LC1500. Start looking for a gas station when I hit 100 miles. What octane does eveyone use? I always used 93 but the manual says 87 is fine. I'm probably wasting money on the 93 octane.

What the manual says, 87, but Savage has only 8.5:1 compression ratio.

Default saving gas and pipes

I was getting 48 mile per gal highway on my 2002 Intruder 800vs. I found the pipes were starting to blue. I polished the pipes with blue job and adjusted the carbs to reduce fule feed. I now get 50 miles per gal or a bit better on the highway. The pipes are doing well, with little to no blueing. I am able to crude 125 miles with out hitting reserve wile loaded for a trip with mild lugage and sadle bags. Just a thought.
Note I did look into a larger tank, but decided taking a break every 2 hours would not be a dumb idea when traveling, so no need to upgrade the tank.

Yes you are, higher octane can actually reduce fuel economy. Just use what the book says or the lowest octane rating that doesn't cause pinging or knock. Higher octane is needed for higher compression engines, compression can cause the fuel to preignite, higher octane has additives that retard ignition otherwise it is the same stuff.

I got mine 2004 Savage and am getting very good milage. On my first riding trip from a dealer to home, 127 miles in 2 gallons. That is little over 60 m/gallon.

I am riding flat land in 40 degree temp at about 50-60 mph. Out of 127, 120miles were ridden on expressway. Perhaps that is the reason.

Hope this helps.

Default VS800

Mine is getting 50 mpg on highway and about 40mpg city. On highway I get 125 miles and have not hit reserve just yet. I am not sure what is happening to Rubydee's bike. I would check the fule mix in your carbs. Unless you are hauling a side car, and lots of luggage, it should be a bit better than 35mpg.

Just filled up after running my first full tank after a stage III rejet. 1998 1500LC, HC Stage III jet kit, modded air filter, Dyna 3000 module on curve 3, Hard Krome 3" Big Straights. Got 38.9mpg with a mix of heavy handed acceleration , some 2 up riding and about 30 miles of 75mph freeway riding, the rest was in town stop and go.

Prior to the jet kit my best average was 42mpg. I figure I could at least get that after the rejet. I'll be rechecking after I run this tank through.

Mike,

Is your bike Intruder Volusia 800 or just regular Intruder 800? I am wondering if there is any difference in mileage between these two.

Thanks,

Deo

I have a 1997 1400 Intruder and I get around 132 miles before I run dry if I stay under 70 mph. Over 70 mph its around 100 miles or less. . I look for a gas station at 100 miles and have started to carry a small 2 gallon gas can with me on long trips were there maybe long distances between stations.

This topic is proving to be very helpful for a new rider such as myself. I havent refilled my tank since I initially filled it, so at least now I have an idea when to start looking to fuel up.

I topped off my 3.7 gallon tank on my GZ 250, hopefully I'll be able to get 200 miles out of it. We'll see! I'm suprised to see that many bigger bikes have smaller tanks.

Maybe Suzuki will realize that Kawasaki Vulcan 800s have 4 gallon tanks and upsize the Intruder 800 tanks to compete....

The Volusia has a much larger tank, 4.5 gallons vs 3.2 gallons - so it should have a better range...
