Default Comparing front tire sizes

When I bought my M50 I liked the fact that the front tire was relatively large (130/90 - 16). Seeing such a beefy tire up front gave me a sense of assurance that it would be safer coming up against road hazards such as pot holes or highway debris.

When I recently viewed a photo of the new Vulcan 900 SE I noticed how much smaller the front tire was compared to my tire (80/90 - 21). The wheel is much larger in diameter (21" vs. 16"), but the actual tire is much smaller.

I'm wondering if there is any hard data on how these two different tire sizes are likely to hold up against road hazards, etc.?
