Default Hoping for some advice

I'm a pretty big guy, 6ft 280 pounds. I'm 23 now, and used to ride dirtbikes on at least a weekly sometimes daily basis back when I was 13-16 before my family moved to a more suburban area (from WI to Hampton Roads VA) and I sold my dirtbike.

When I sold my bike I weighed probably around 250 pounds. It was a YZ 250 with minor modifications (boysen reeds, bill's pipe, dgy suspension), and even with my weight was still pretty damn quick for my needs.

I've wanted to make the jump to a road bike for several years now. My parents live about 4 hours away and I'd like to be able to comfortably travel that distance on a bike if I wanted to. Several of my old dirtbiking buddies have moved on to sportsbikes, and they all get uncomfortable after about an hour. Plus, I've just always liked cruisers.

Originally I thought I'd want to look for a used V-Star Classic, but after some more reading it seems like they don't do so well with leans and also considering my size don't know if the bike would be able to handle a passenger at all. Now, I think I'm pretty settled on a Suzuki M50, but was wondering if anyone has experience with YZ's and can give me an idea of what kind of power to expect out of the M50 in comparison to a 250 two stroke. There's a lot more dry weight on the m50.

Basically having a lot of trouble trying to decide what engine size would be best for me to pick up as I get back into riding (although a different type of riding). I also don't want to go bigger than really necessary because I'm looking forward to good fuel economy & would like to spend ~$4k or less for a 2003+ bike.

Cliff Notes - What would you recommend for a 280 pound returning rider who's used to a YZ 250? Without going overboard.
