Default New rider questions.....

I'm a new rider, so I'm not familiar with some of the terms and hand signals used. I've seen the term "squid" used several times, and I'm not sure exactly what that means. Also, we had nice weather here in TN last weekend, so I got my bike out for a while and noticed a lot of other riders on the road as well. So we'd wave at each other as we'd meet on the road, but I noticed that almost every one of them would always wave with the left hand down low to the side, almost like he was trying to give me a "low 5". Now I understand the left hand, because obviously your right hand is on the throttle, but why down low on the side of the bike? The first couple of times, I didn't take my hand off the grip. I just raised my fingers to wave similar to the way I wave to fellow drivers when I'm in my truck, but after I noticed all the other bikers were waving the same way, I started waving like that too.
