Default Chilly ride this morning

It is starting to cool off here, with the rain gone I thought I would ride my bike to work this morning. It was 54 and chilly this morning.

I need to buy some cooler weather gear if I plan on riding for a few more months.

Any recommendations?

Leather. I got a very nice riding jacket at Rural King. It was on sale for ~$130. Heavyweight, with a liner, and zippered vents in front and rear. It has back padding, and a double layer of leather in the elbows and shoulders. The only thing lacking is armor. My nylon mesh jacket has removable armor, and I've been considering trying to fit them to the leather jacket.

Under 60 deg. It's always leather for me.

Make sure you don't get a fashion grade jacket.

Get a wrap that's made specifically for motorcycling. The functionality built in to time tested designs will show their worth over time, as opposed to a "Fonzie" jacket.

That, and purpose built jackets are made with thicker leather to protect you if (God forbid) you ever go down, whereas a fashion grade leather jacket will come apart faster than denim jeans.

My leather jacket did good this morning, but my chaps I left at home. Thank God I had lowers to help keep the wind off my legs.

If you go to a store to buy a jacket bring a sweat shirt with you. You will be surprised how a jacket will fit well with a t-shirt, but tight with a sweat shirt. Get a jacket with a belt to keep the wind from blowing up it.

Yeah it was kinda nippy when I left the house at 5:30 am in my neck of the woods.

I don't know where you live but aside from dealers there are two places that I use in Dallas. Bates Discount Cycle they have been around since 1972 and they have many interesting things in there shop. They carry parts new and used ass well as gear. There is also Moto Liberty They tend to cater to the street bikes, mostly riding gear with a few accessories. Both Are on I 35 Bates is north of I 635 and Moto Liberty is just south of I 635.

I got about 2 miles down the road this morning before I turned around, went home, and put the liner in my jacket.

I wear a mesh jacket that came with a 3 season removable liner. This is my first season with it, but I've been out a few morning with temps in the low 50's and have been perfectly comfortable with the liner in. It even has armor in the elbows and shoulders (I don't know why the back armor wasn't included too). I bought it off of NewEnough.com great site to look at. I also have a pair of leather riding gloves. No real insulation, but they break the wind and the cold doesn't seem to get to my hands. for really cold times I have a pair of winter riding gloves (forget the brand right now). for pants I have a pair of insulated pants that I'll use when I go for a long ride. For a ride to work I just suck it up and deal with cold legs for 30 min.

The nice S GA weather. Where is the smiley for the middle finger

My brother lives in Destin, and rubs it in during the winter about wearing shorts.

It was about 51 F this morning. I hung up the textile jacket and broke out the leather one for the first time, but took the liner out. Also tried out my new overpants, also without the liner and went from mesh gloves to heavier ones. Once it gets down in the 40's i'll add a mask to keep the wind off my neck and face and put the liners back in jacket and pants. I'm usually OK down to about 40 then I have trouble keeping my hands/fingers from going numb.

I agree with others on a decent Motorcycle leather jacket. Over pants to keep the wind off your legs and may as well get them with some protection in the knees and hips while you are at it.

It was 54 here and I had on a sweatshirt. I also am wearing my rain pants. I am also looking for a jacket. I have tried on some leather jackets but they seemed too heavy. I think I am looking for a textile or mesh with removable liners.

Leathers are the way to go.We had a touch of frost a week ago. I had to drag out my warm insulated gloves. It's been in the lower 40's in the am and the mid 70's in the afternoon here for the last week!!

Ahhh...The two weeks a year it actual drops below 50, I pretty much wear everything in my closet along with leather jacket and chaps...And if I'm still cold then I go back home garage the bike jump in the truck and turn on the seat warmer till it goes back above 50...

Put the windshield on my bike last night, what a difference it makes keeping the cold wind off of you.

You warm weather people always make me laugh. it hits 49 and you bundle up like its an ice age! Here a lot of people still aren't even wearing a coat at 49 degrees. I'm usually in t-shirts until low 40's high 30's. I'll never forget when I worked with an International company we had some people from Argentina come up for a week of training. They do get some snow down there, but they had never experienced anything like a good 'ole New England winter and we had two storms that week! Those poor people looked like eskimos, they even went cloths shopping just to buy thicker clothing. They'd walk into work and all you could see were a pair of eyes, everyone else had maybe a jacket on.
