Default Im Baffled

So my bike came with Cobra drag pipes on it. They didn't have the baffles in and were so loud that I would get headaches. I know the neighbors didn't appreciate it either. I talked to the guy I got the bike from and he had the baffles. I out them in and now it is probably quieter than stock. The baffles are about 12" to 14" long. Is there an in between sound with these pipes? I like to hear the exhaust but I don't like permanent hearing damage.

if you go to jpcycles.com or any one of a number of other websites you will find a large assortment of baffles. As a general rule the shorter they are, the louder they are.

Can they be shortened and still be serviceable?

Depends on what type you have. Do you have a pic?

They look a lot like these but have a lot more holes in them. I didnt know they were "universal" I think that the shorter ones would work. They have a 4" that might be what I am looking for. Thanks

If you cut an end of those the screw holes will rapidly elongate and they will rattle like crazy. But short ones are dirt cheap.

I think we are missing out on something here.

If they went from VERY LOUD to very soft when the "baffles" were put in, it's not likely that they are like the picture because those are really more of a resonator than a real baffle.

If you hold up a bare baffle and try to look through it long-ways, can you see through it, just like an empty pipe? If not, there is a "real" baffle plate in there that you might be able to drill out for the desired effect.

If you can see through it, I'm at a loss as to how the sound could have changed that much. Maybe I'm missing something.

I need to get some sound clips for you. It is a crazy difference. I will work on that.

OK, mmmmm, how to say this without coming off as a nasty a-hole.....??

I (we) don't need to hear sound clips. I believe you that there is a BIG difference. The question is WHY there is a big difference.

Unless there is already some kind of plate in the pipe to begin with, a "straight through" baffle won't do much of anything........no matter how many holes it has in it ....or how big they are.
