Default interesting thing on Chain cleaners...

Chain O-ring WD-40 exposure effects study and results - ADVrider

So, WD-40 is probably fine.

Yes, fine as a cleaner (though expensive compared to kerosene). Not fine as a lube.

Did you read the WHOLE thread?

I did and the impression I got was: WD40 is probably OK in a pinch but probably NOT good for use all the time.

I noted 2 things in the subsequent posts. At least one brand of chain lube is mostly Mineral Spirits.....which is what I use for cleaning when needed.....which is almost NEVER because......
"If the chain is not too dirty, the operation of lubrication is normally sufficient to clean the chain."

Which is why I lube the chain every 300 miles or so with a few drops of synthetic 90W and when it gets to looking too bad, I wipe it with an old towel or shop rag before adding lube.

As long as you stick with kero or some light oil like diesel fuel, ATF or mineral spirits but NOT a pentrating oil you should be just fine.

P.S. I am NOT trying to convince anybody of anything here. Do whatever you want with your chain.
