Default Buying new

I am a new rider. Like, I took the MSF course last weekend.

I have been checking out used bikes but I haven't liked any of them nearly as much as a C50, in terms of comfort and balance.

My worry about the C50 is that I am inexperienced and I worry about damaging the bike.

I was warned from new bikes by some bikers "You will drop it", but if I put crash guards on it, will that mitigate that potential issue?

I don't believe in the automatic "you will drop it" way of thinking. Have you ridden a C50?

a lot depends on your size, strength and ability.
I also think that there's too many people in the "it's not if but when you'll drop your first bike" crowd.

If the C50 feels right to you, then it probably is.
I sat on a bunch of bikes while deciding on my first bike. Most felt huge and too heavy for me. I'm glad I chose the S50 - it's helped me become a proficient rider and I don't ever plan on dropping it!

Don't go out riding with that thought in your head or you will drop it. The C50 is a very stable and easy to ride bike, well balanced and not to heavy. It's a good bike for both starters and experienced riders alike. Its a solid choice, I would go for it if you like it.

No longer necessary! Someone put up a 98 marauder 800 that I bought. Balances more or less the same, less than half the cost. My next bike might be a new C50 or C90...

Most drops will occur while doing slow speed maneuvers, so as mentioned get into the parking lot. As far as hwy bars they are an excellent mod. Mine saved my left leg and foot from getting crushed, pinned, torn apart, etc... Better to scratch and bend the bar than recovering from a leg injury. All I had was a bit of mud on my leg, easy fix!!

Congrats!! Take it slow and be safe. Most crashs are within the first 6 months of riding so take it slow & just be careful. Not everyone drops or crashes their bike...I haven't...knock on wood...
