| This is my first post here so Hello out there and I appreciate any help I can find. I just bought a used 02' 1400 Intruder in Delray Beach Florida from Powersports here in town. I was looking for the battery to see if the terminals need cleaning and since I was not given an owners manual, I went looking. I removed the seat and no battery readily apparent just a spagetti bowl of wires and didn't seem to be under the side panels. anyone know where it is, and where can I get a manual? One more thing, the speedo cable is broken. Does it remove from the bottom?? Thanks again for reading this post, and I hope to meet anyone who's local to me. | For the life of me, I've been trying to figure out what the heck are "tsphagge terminals". I'm sure it was a typo. Just thought it was funny. That's what I get when I step away from the computer for a moment and my cat jumps on the desk and walks across my keyboard. The battery is located in front of the rear tire. It's frustrating and difficult to access. It requires the bike be jacked up a few inches and the battery has to be lowered down to the ground. Last edited by diamond_jim; 05-11-2008 at 10:03 AM. |

| The speedo cable can be removed from the top or the bottom, by unscrewing the outer cable from the back of the speedo and from the drive gear. If your cable is broken you will probably have to remove both ends to remove the broken pieces. Make sure you remove the old cable before you buy a new one, as a broken cable is only one of the things that can cause the speedo to quite working, and you don;t want to buy something you don;t need. As for the battery, roll the rear wheel up on a brick or block of 2x4. Remove the two bolts from the back of the bottom of the battery box, and the bottom will swing open to remove the battery.

| I found the battery exactly where you said it would be and probably the last, logical place I would look it. It came out easily, it tested for a dead cell so it's back to the dealer for a new one tomorrow am. Nice meeting you. Allan

| I just got back from a friends house that has an older intruder and remembered this post. Yep, the battery is in front of the rear tire. He had it fall out and drag by the cables last year in the middle of nowhere. He ended up finding an old slim jim wrapper in a field and tied it up till he got home. Funny stuff if it's not you. I suggested that he modify it and move it to the front of the bike, if possible.

| The battery box bottom is held shut by two good sized bolts. The only way to have it come open is if those two bolts both fall out because they were not tightened when the battery was put in, or if the hinge in the front of the box breaks. This is a good lesson- to prevent dangerous problems, everyone should give thier bike a once over every now and then, looking for loose bolts and metal fatigue.

| Thanks again for you guys taking the time to respond to the battery location. I found it right where you said it would be. it removed easily enough without having to raise the rear wheel at all. I replaced the battery because it had a dead cell and the bike, a new bike, for me at least a 2002 1400 Intruder is a dream.

| I saw the title and some how I just knew that the bike was going to be an intruder. That has got to be the weirdest place to put a battery. Not bad to get at, just a weird local. Jim
