Default New rider and new to forum

Hello to all,

My name is Albert. I am new to riding. Like many of today's converts, gas mileage attracts me. However, I grew up admiring bikes, but never had the guts to get on one until now. What a waste of so many years!!! hopefully I will be able to share my new adventures with you all in short order. I do have a question for anyone who knows this particular bike. I own an 03 Intruder VS800Gl (a friend kept it in a garage for years..only 2480 miles on it) and it's got a broken tail light stem. I ordered a new stem, however changing it may prove to be a challenge. Doea anyone know how to undo to wiring for the rear tail lights? I would greatly appreciate the help.

I can't answer your specific question about that bike but I just had the adventure of removing my tail section to ship it off for painting.

I can't imagine the mechanics are much different. If you look under the tail you're bound to see some wiring heading in one direction or another and if you can follow it to an open spot you may be able to disconnect it without removing the fender. My fender was off already so all I had to do is find the sleeved area and pull three wires out of their harness. They were made to come out at that spot so you just need to find that spot.

Go to www.partsfish.com and pull a fiche for your model year of bike and it should give you a better idea of how the bike comes apart.

Good luck.

I think you are talking about a rear turn signal.

You remove the light by removing the large Philips head screw on the bottom of the bracket.
The wires go thru the bracket, under the fender, then thru a hole in the fender and connect under the seat.

Start by remove the left and right side covers. The right side is held on by one bolt in the upper front corner, the left side is held on by one bolt in the loser center. Remove the bolts and pull the covers out and free of the mounting tabs. Then remove the driver’s seat, which is held on with a couple of 10mm bolts in the front, one on each side. Pull the driver’s seat up and forward to remove it. You’ll now see the two bolts that hold on the front of the passenger seat. Remove them, pull the seat forward and then up (the back slips under a loop bracket. You can now trace the wires to the connection point, where they just plug in. Removing the three screws tht hold the ignition box in place will make it easier to feed the wired through, as the wires run under the box.
Don’t worry, it’s easier than it sounds.
