Default Good cold weather gloves?

Its a bit nippy here. I bundled up and felt fine, except for my poor right hand. I was wearing Gore-Tex winter gloves, but I guess I need more.

The absolute best gloves are electric ones from Gerbing or Winder, but they are high dollar. They are also a pain to use unless you get the jacket also. I use the complete set (pants socks jacket gloves) on my Harley and stay toasty all day long in temps down below zero. But the set cost me nearly $800, and the VS800 does not put out enough electrical power to run the whole suit.

HERE is a review of 13 different cold weather gloves. The winner was the HARLEY-DAVIDSON COLD WEATHER GAUNTLET GLOVES: $80, a pretty reasonable price for cold weather gloves. But even the warmest gloves have their limits, and after a while the cold gets through and you start to get cold.

One thing that really helps is the National Cycle wind deflectors. The slip under the mirror mounts in less than a minute, and keep the wind off your hands. I found that with these keep your hands out of the direct wind, allowing any decent pair of gloves to keep you warm. I slip on a set of clear ones on my Intruder in the winter and take them off in the spring. They are available on the National Cycle website.

I scored a pair of the Widdler Lectric-Heat gloves from a close-out deal for $10. They have wires ( that can be disconnected entirely via 2 prong plug so when it's not too cold you can still wear them ) that you run through your jacket sleeves and down to another plug. That plug connects with the part of the wire that connects to your battery. I leave the plug sitting just out behind my seat so it's out of view but I can just plug it up when it's cold. My hands stay toasty ( but not sweating ... they breathe ) warm no matter how cold it is.

The wiring takes all of 2 minutes to hook up ( and leave hooked up ) to your battery. Just remember to always disconnect the plug to that main wire ( duh ) or you'll drain your battery.

Also, with the way the plugs work, if there were an accident and you were ejected from the bike, the wires would just disconnect without issues.

I echo the need to use something to keep the wind off the hands for any sustained riding... Have National Cycles on one bike and the batwing fairing on the other.

As for gloves, I’ve got a pair of FXR leather gauntleted snowmobile gloves (200-something thinsulate) that I start wearing during the coolish part of the day at about this time of year… the FXR’s get seriously warm at temps above 40-45, so they are for cold-weather use only…

Rode in with `em this morning – 27 degrees, or so the weatherman said – 75-miles, hands were toasty (I am using a heated jacket liner, however…).

Last I saw they were about $70...

You actually ride in minus temps? Got way bigger cojones than I do. I don't even think my bike would start today, it's about 2 F right now.

I can imagine riding in your neighborhood vinnie. I grew up in Chicago. Still kinda miss the winters.
I'm in the same area as Dr and I'm still riding, if I can keep my right hand warm.
J&P has got a 10% off sale this Friday and Saturday. I'm gonna order the National Hand Guards. Of course that'll do me no good tomorrow when we're expecting a big dip in the temp.

I have the Tourmaster Polar Tex gloves - I ride down to about 34 degrees and have had no problems yet.

I have a pair of lined leather gloves from Yamaha.... not bad, but my fingers still get a little cold at times.

That's my problem too. The gloves I wear have kept my hands (and fingers) warm in some of the worse weather. But now riding, my fingers freeze. I'm hoping the combination of those gloves and the wind deflectors will keep them toastie.

National Cycle
Bob. Do the deflectors fit on the roadliner ?
Do you have 'em on yours ?
Our mirror stalks are in a different location than some other bikes.
I tried the hippo hands and they didn't work 'cause the bracket that they sent didn't even fit !

do they still make isotoners? anyone remember them? They were real big in the 80's. Real thin gloves but warm. I would like to get a pair of those for under my star gloves.... I like the star gloves I have because they have a nice gauntlet on them which helps keep the wind from getting up the sleeve of my jacket.

My gloves are actually a size too big.... Found them at RideNow while waiting for service one day..... regularly 49.95 but they were mis-marked down to 19.95. Normally I would have said something but, Screw em, they got enough of my money when I bought my bike.

I posted this some time ago...I still stick by it. My Olympia Cold Throttle gloves are still doing GREAT by me. Can't beat the price either.

I don't think the link I posted on the bottom of the following thread works anymore, but hey...you can google it.

Peace.

You could also try snowmobile/atv gauntlets. They are like a big mit that Velcros to the handlebars, than you just slip your hands inside them.

Well drbob it is -15 here right now and I think a perfect temp to fully test any glove. I'll just watch though.

DrBob, should we tell him that it was 70+ here today and I was sweating while wearing a light jacket? Probably not.

I have to admit that after almost 20 years here in MN I would not want to live in another climate. Lots of snow on the ground, beautiful and I am used to the cold. I do miss riding though!

I used to use Hippo Hands in Michigan, and they helped a lot in temps below freezing. I think they've improved since then too. I now have the Olympia Cold Throttle that Poe-Boy mentioned and agree they are good. When it gets real cold I have some silk glove liners that I wear under my gloves, and they prove useful also.
