Default good deal on this bike?

hi everyone, this is my second post, but i've been offered what i think is a pretty good deal on a new bike.

first, i have a kawi 900, 06, bought it last june. that is my first and only bike to own, as i just started riding last june. i fell in love with riding as everyone told me i would, and i like my vulcan, but i want something bigger and more touring, so i went back to my dealer to see what they had.

the deal is on a new 2006 (held over from last fall) yamaha roadstar midnight silverado, stickered at 13,500. they are willing to give me a total of 2500 off that bike and give me 400 over what i owe on the kawi (i figured i'd be upside down on the loan). with tax, i'm out the door for 11,100. people i talked to said that's a good deal, but i wanted to get some other opinions. this bike has about everything i was looking for: bigger engine, hard bags, bigger frame (i'm a hefty guy ) the only things that concern me are the fact that it's not liquid cooled like my vulcan, and it's not fuel injected.

do you think this is a good deal? any suggestions? thanks!

According to Kelly trade-in on yours should be between $4100-4900 – with clean retail in the mid $6K range... Depending on what all is included in “out the door,” you could be close – but just a guess, the dealer won’t be losing any money... having never put more than $10K in a bike purchase in my life, I’d have to think twice...

But, I'd not be put off by the lack of liquid cooling or lack of injection... both are nice, but grossly over-rated for V-Twins...

Here's the math.

The new bike has a Kelly Blue Book Value Retail, note this is where it begins...the pricing...at 9,645.00

The bike began at 13,500 less 2,500 they are taking off leaving 11,100.00.

The dealer is ahead 1,455.00.

Your bike looks to be worth in a trade in according to the same Kelly Blue Book at 4,100. With 400.00 over now 4,500.

This leaves the dealer with a total pricing profit now on your bike, using the numbers given of 1,055.00. Plus then they will get the tax, tags, and prep money from you...so the service prep revenue.

The Yamaha does, or I'm pretty sure a 5 year warranty.

I don't think it is a deal. I think it would be, in my opinion, a profitable sale, with no frills for the dealer to move old inventory that has been floor planned.

Now would I personally do it? Yes. I think that is one awesome Yammer. I did test drive one. If you get it...see if it has the power to push you off the front seat when you get above 60. Or if you take a passenger...when I rode it...I shifted from 2nd to 3rd and I could feel her sliding back off the seat. So if you get it..a sissy bar I would also recommend.

Y'all are missing something. They're willing to give critter $400 more than what is owed, not $400 more than blue book trade-in value. He's basically been able to make payments on the 900 since June, learn to love riding on it, etc...and trade it in on a same year, but bigger model with out being 'upside down'.

He also stated that the final price would be $11,100 out the door. That includes all extra costs. That's his final price to be paid.

Critter, to address your concerns, HD has been making air cooled big bikes for years. So has Kawasaki. Carbs have been around for years. Mine run great, I'm sure your new Roadstar's will, too.

Great bike..enjoy the ride, post plenty of pics.

Now I took "out the door" as not net net. If it is..I'm sorry. My bad.

I love dealers. They are all the same. Must have a school for BS sales techniques.

Critter, what you didn't say was what you owed on your current bike.

$400 over sounds good on paper, but what did you pay originally? For all we know you dropped $4000 on a $8000 buy and only financed $4000. Subtract the last year's payments and say you are left with $2800 remaining on what you owe. $400 over give you $3200 for you trade on a bike valued at $4100.

That means you will take a $4800 loss on your bike in one year. Are you willing to accept that? I wouldn't. Of course, I made these numbers up, but you should get the idea. You may be better off, but I just wanted to point it out.

$2500 is off the MSRP. I think it may be a little high, but not bad. Ask the dealer for actuall numbers, not bottom line. I always ask for actual trade $$, incentives $$, list price on the buying vehicle $$, and finance rate. Don't let them play the dealer game. They want your business and won't shuffle you out the door. If they do, then they aren't worth your time.

yes you are all right! i owe 5800 on the bike, so they are allowing me 6200 for it. So what kbb says i'm overpaying on the yamaha it says i'm getting a heck of a lot more on the vulcan.

the think about kbb is that they really don't take into account new or used on the bikes. if you put in 06, it just assumes it's used with 6K miles on it. i know it's not the same as cars, but certainly there is a difference between a new roadstar and a used roadstar, isn't there?

the other thing is that they use a different set of numbers from a different book. the book they used has the medium value of my bike at 5100, a lot more than kbb.

and chicster, i do have all the numbers on paper. it's 750 rebate from yamaha, the rest is dealer incentive money to make that 2500 off the sticker price.

one thing i didn't mention is that the bank i use now for my bike will give me the same interest rate on a new one this year....6.5% for as long as i want to finance up to 66 months.

I've been number crunching and I didn't like it.
Then I re-read your post, that's not a bad deal. Looks like you are getting the bike for around $10,600.
Definitely sounds reasonable with the tax and tags included. Ask them to take an even $11,000 out the door for giggles and see if they bite. I'd do it just to grate their cheese.

KBB is a good reference point, but can't be relied upon when purchasing. Like you said, they look at residual after the depreciation value, not new. They also use a relative average of the whole country and try to piece meal each area based on cost of living. So, it may not be accurate for your area.

Sounds like a bargain to me. I think the Road Stars are a great bike and if you want to add bling the options are almost limitless

well guys i went to ride the roadstar today, and i really like it. i was surprised at how different it felt from my vulcan. the seat is more like sitting on top of the bike, and vulcan seat is more, down in the bike? if that makes sense. lot more power, too, but not overwhelming. the ride was great at high speed, but i'm thinkin the windshield is coming off at least for now. felt a little like turbulance above 65 or so. i've never ridden with a windshield so i'm probably just not used to it. shifting seems smooth and easy but up and down. i think it's a good bike for me, and i know that once i own it and ride it for a few days, it will fit like a glove. i told the dealer to put a hold on it for me, so i'm gonna buy it i think. i'll keep you all updated. any other suggestions for a newer rider much appreciated!

On the windshield....it sounds like it just needs adjusted. My current bike is the first I've had with a shield. My last bike will be the last bike without one.

First, thanks for the response. How would you suggest adjusting it?
