gbitters, welcome to the forum. You might want to give a little more info. Front/rear/both. When do they squeak (don't laugh) I've seen squeaky brakes all the time, not just when they're being applied. Have you recently changed pads....what type? Plenty of great help here if you give 'em all a little more to work with.

Yup, Intruder 1500LCs have squeaky brakes. We call it the "Intruder mating call". LOL

To minimize rear brake noise, apply a small amount of High Temp Waterproof Brake Grease (a couple bucks at an auto parts store) to the contact points where the piston meets the rear metal surface of the pad assembly, and to the holding pins. Do not get it on the surface of the pad, and use only a small amount.

Also, the stock steel pad shims suck, and much of the noise you hear is the shims and pads vibrating. Get an aftermarket SBS Brake Pad Shim Set #9500 (about $6), which are composite and have an adhesive back, so they won't vibrate. Apply them to the back of the brake pads. While you have the pads off swap to a good quality aftermarket brake pad set, both for less noise and better braking than the stock pads. Hell, even most dealers don't put the stock pads back on.

Those tips apply to any year LC. But there is a problem specific to your 1998. Those early years had a single hockey-puck style disk sitting inside the hollow space of the outer rear piston. Later years had the disks on both the outer and inner piston, and the models so equipped do not have nearly as much brake noise. You can get a disk for the inside piston from any Suzuki dealer, part #69126-10F00, for about $12-14. Drop it in the rear caliper inner piston, and along with the high-temp brake grease and the SBS Brake Pad Shim Set most of your noise will go away.

So $12-14 for the hockey puck + $6 for the shim set + $2 for some high temp brake grease- for about $20 you should see a big improvement. For another $35 you can get some decent aftermarket brake pads and see a huge improvement in both noise and performance.

Sounds like DrBob has done his usual excellent job of answering the question, so I'll just say

Oh stop, I'm blushing...

I actually did these mods two weeks ago to a 1998 LC, so it was fresh in my memory.

Other than the noisy brakes, the Intruder 1500LC had few quirks. If you find that the motor is turning over slowly when you try to start it, ask me how to adjust the decompression valve on the rear cylinder. And of course there was the fuel tank recall a couple years ago, but most likely you bike got the new rubber bumpers on the tank already. Other than that, the 1500LC is a good bike that should last 100,000 miles if you take care of it.

I had the same problem last year with my rear brakes. I had a squeaking and grinding noise when rolling the motorcycle. Took the bike to a local shop and found that my rear pads were worn down to nothing. Like you I also have a 98 1500LC.

My breaks were squeeking .... it was easier to just take some white lithium in a spray can and just spray the rotor down on both sides. quiets them right down

lol ... do not do that.

I do what Dr. Bob do .... except I use this orange stuff called "brake silencer" instead of grease.
