| Own a '06 C50. It's got a K&N filter, PCIII, V&H Cruzers. When the bike is in nuetral and I twist the throttle, black smoke comes out of the pipes. My rear right side turn signal has become discolored, too. MY questions: I've heard the discoloring of the tail-light is natural to these bikes, but is the black smoke normal? It's not a lot of black smoke, but it is visible. This happens when I crack the throttle, but not when I ease into it. Again, do I need to adjust something or is the normal?

| In Training ![]() | Sounds like it's getting a little extra fuel which is needed with those aftermarket parts. I have V&H exhaust, K&N's on mine and had to rejet the carbs to give it a little more fuel. Much like yours, it'll puff a little smoke when I goose the throttle but otherwise it's not visible.

| The mixture is too rich. The black smoke is caused by unburnt fuel, as when you blip the throttle it is dumping more fuel into the cylinders than can burn correctly until the RPMs build and the air flow volume catches up.

| So that means the custom PC map is a bit strong, right? Probably to help throttle response.

| The map is apparently a little rich, but if throttle response is good and the smoke is only a little when you get on the throttle hard, you can safely ignore it if you want to. Rich is better than lean- rich will only hurt MPG a little, make your plugs foul sooner, and make you need to wash the butt end of your bike more often. Lean melts things like plugs, pistons, and valves.

| Save your setting to a laptop of the map you are running now and play around with them. You can always go back to where you are now. Maybe even try the stock map.

| THANX A BUNCH! Great responses...as always. I'll consider CC's advise about saving my setting to a laptop and playing with the map a little. However, I think your responses tell me I'm running a little rich and I think I want to live with that considering the damage running lean can do. AGAIN, THANKS FOR THE HELP! RIDE SAFE!!

| If you are really concerned about it, pull the plugs and see what they look like before you do any changes, My guess is they will be fine. BTW what Map are you using ? one downloaded from Dynojet ? I loaded a custom map with the same set up for my Moto Guzzi and it ran like crap. Then I loaded a map with the nearest setup from the Dynojet site and it runs awsome.

Yeah, I've got a map downloaded from the Dynojet site. The bike runs great. I have no complaints about its performance. This is kinda the reason I'm hesitant to start messing with the PC. If small amounts of smoke when cracking the throttle and some discoloration of the rear right turn signal is normal, I think I can live with it. I'm still contemplating the suggestion to fiddle with it...but I'm not sure.

| Mine has a little black smoke come out of the pipes, and i'm all stock. So that sounds normal to me. I have to clean my turn signal every now and then. I seem to only notice it when it's cold too. So i would assume that it is running rich when cold.

| I currently have a stock ecu, with only drilled and demickeyed pipes. Puff of black smoke whe goosing it off idle - ok after that. Have a techlusion on order, will wait to see what effect that has. Haven't noticed the turn signal dirty - only do 500kms a week, and wash it each weekend. The big test is to have someone ride behind and let you know what it is doing while you are riding it. That is when the effect is important. Thinking of putting an Air/Fuel meter on the bike while I set up the TFI unit - then I would know the answer. Quite easy to do - have one left over from the hobby car (twin turbo 2 litre making 260KW in a 380kg car - for the road). Once you set it up with one of those, you leave it unless you change fuel type. |
