Default replaced air fliter/running lean?

I just replaced the air filter in my 1984 suzuki gs450l and it runs a little funny now it seems to lose power sometimes, like it was running out of gas then takes off again. If I put the old filter back in it works fine. I also took out the plugs and it seems to be running lean because the plug is whitish.

Does anyone know why it would do this just by changing the air filter and is there a way to fix that? (I know just leave my old air filter, but I'd like to know why it does this) Thanks.

Cedric

Did you put in the same type of air filter? Or did you put in a high flow K&N, or something similar? If you went high flow, you would probably need to rejet.

No I didn't change the type I went straight to a suzuki dealer and got the one listed for this bike. Actually the one that was in it doesn't look the same so maybe I did change the type.

This is my first bike so I'm not sure what you mean by I need to rejet. Sorry. is that something I can do myself?

Maybe it had a high flow type in it and you put an OEM back in which is probably more restricted. Take the old one to a shop and try to get one just like it.
