Default I thought cruisers were cheaper to insure

Hello, ^_^

After putting over 10k on my little '01 gz250 (bought in '04), I thought it was about time to upgrade to a bigger bike. I was kindof shout to hear the price quotes that I've received from Statefarm. I was always under the impression that supersports would cost more to insure than cruisers.

Below are quotes from Statefarm. I decided to use them since I have my house policy with them.

Male, 27, no accidents. $500 deductible -- 25/50/25 coverage.

GSXR 600 -- $197
M50, C50 -- $349
SV650,650R -- $247

State Farm apparently doesn't consider the type of bike, just the engine size. That makes no sense to me. Your quote for the M50 is pretty close to what they quoted me for my Marauder 800. I went with Markel American for $188 a year (Markel American Insurance Company Presents: Motorcycle Insurance).

Farmers insures my M50 for $185 a year. Sounds like Statefarm doesn't really want the motorcycle business.

Takumaku,

I've always understood the same thing.

I know it's not a straight comparison, but the riders I know with sport-bikes, ALL pay more than I do on my C50 cruiser. I am sure that there can be exceptions to the rule about sportbikes riders paying more than cruiser riders, but from what you've posted, I don't know that you would be one of them.

Many insurance companies broker their motorcycle insurance policies to other companies and this can increase the premium (everybody wants their cut). Therefore, prices tend to vary quite a bit when shopping around.

Shop around. I currently insure with Progressive because they were the cheapest for me. I think you can find lower prices than what you have posted here.

Good luck. Ride safe!

Did you try Progressive? They were the cheapest when I got my C50.

I've tried Progressive too. They quoted me about $180 ish for C50/M50s, but over $1100 for the GSXR. I just thought it was odd that Statefarm would insure a supersport so cheaply. Now I can somewhat understand why alot squids around here ride them.

Try Geico. I pay $220 per year, full coverage on a 2005 C50T. But I've been riding for 35 years with no problems so that has a lot to do with it also.

C50, insured with Progressive, full coverage, $250 deductible, $179/yr. Oh - I do have a clean record (knock on wood).

Seen the Geico motorcycle insurance commercial about insurance companies not knowing a Kawasaki Ninja from the black suited/masked variety? It's true. Like md2 said, many base it on the size of the engine, not the type of bike. Imagine what kinda quite you'd have gotten on a M109R. I tried insuring my C50 with ALFA, since they have both my houses and both cars, but they couldn' touch it. Between Geico and Progressive (and a couple other m/c specific insurers) Progressive was easily the cheapest.

There's no way in hell they'd give you that price on a Gixxer. If they did, every boy-racer in the country would go with them.

My V-Strom is $200 a year cheaper than my Boulevard was. Of course not with the same insurance company. Glad I shopped around. The company I had my Boulevard with wanted $200 more a year to cover the V-Strom. The company I have my V-Strom with wanted even more to cover my Boulevard back when I inquired.

Jeez - your cost= $300 (US) per month. My cost less than $15 (US) per month.

Guess I will jump in. I just got a 2002 Intruder VL1500 insured for $350 a year full coverage. I was looking at a 2004 Volusia and it was going to be under $200 a year. I decided to go with the bigger bike and glad I did.

Call Statefarm and see for yourself. As my agent informed me, Statefarm base their rates on the size of the engine, not the design. So basically, a 600 cc supersport would be cheaper to insure than an 800 cc cruiser. As another comparison, I did ask for simliar sized bikes of equal displacement (GSXR 1000 and V-Star 1100) and both had nearly the same insuring cost.

That's insane. So why do all the teenagers whine about horrible prices when they could call State Farm? There must be a catch somewhere.

I dont understand how they can base the price upon the size of hte engine. That does not make sense at all. Why would it be more expensive to insure a 1600 cruiser when you have a GXR-1300R that can go 200mph and still be cheaper?
