Red face Exhaust systems...

Okay guys, this is something there are a lot of topics about, but I just can't find the answers I'm looking for. I did a bunch of searching, so if there is a thread out there with all the answers to these questions...I guess I just suck at the internet.

But anyway....

I'm planning on buying a new M50. One of the first upgrades I'm interested in is an exhaust system. I've learned a bit about them from reading all the topics I can on these boards, but I'm left with quite a few questions. For instance....

What is the difference between a full system and a slip-on exhaust...if a slip on improves sound and performance, what does a full system include that a slip-on doesn't? Also, I've seen mention of powercommanders go hand in hand with talk of new pipes. What is this and is it required when buying new exhaust? Are there any other parts that one should definitely buy when getting new pipes like heat shields, gaskets, etc? What about jet kits?

Hmm, I think that could be it for now. I know this is a lot, and I appreciate you guys even taking the time to read this post...let alone respond to it. I couldn't think of anyone else to ask all this stuff but the guys and gals who probably had the same questions at one point.

THANKS!

Slips one just replace the muffler. Full systems replace, well, the full system, They generally perform better than slip ons, as the whole system woorks together for better flow. When you flow more air, you also need to flow more fuel. A power commander or similar is an option. Usually you can just re-map or flash the fuel injection brain box to adjust the mixture for the new pipes. But if you also make modifications to the intake side, such as high-flow air filters, a power commander or similar is a good way to go.
A jet kit is for carbs, to increase the amount of fuel flowing to the engine. The M50 had fuel injection, not carbs, so you don;t need a jet kit.

So Cobras aren't worth it, huh? Is that a shared feeling among the group?

If that's the case, what would you guys recommend for an m50 in terms of performance and value?

I'm going to build my own exhaust system.

Will post pics when finished.

I'm also looking at exhaust systems, for my '03 Marauder 800 (predecessor of the M50). I don't really care for slip-ons. I've read posts from some people who had trouble with the Cobra slip-ons, either rusting or not fitting right, but have no personal experience with them.

My biggest quandry with new pipes is noise - I do NOT want them too loud. The trouble is, everybody's perception is different. I'd pretty much settled on the V&H Cruzers until I read a post saying they were really loud. I've also looked at the Jardine 2-into-1. The real problem is I don't know anybody with a bike I can listen to.

A few have posted sound bites for others to listen to.

Our local Police Depts. have started a crackdown on noise, motorcycles seem to be the principle target.

Yes, I've listened to a few of the sound bites. They give me an idea of the tone, but not the volume.

The Cobra Speedster slashdowns I have are flaking chrome.
They also seemed to have picked up some discoloration that is not due to heat but looks more like a stain. Not sure from what thoo. I'm not impressed to say the least.

Go vance and hines or hard chrome.

For those concerned with noise I suggest you buy a pipe that can use V&H quite baffles. They do work! Mine are almost too quite.
