Not a fan of flames on ANY bike. My opinion, it would've looked much better with just the metallic wine red fading into the black ONLY, sans flames. But like you said, to each their own. DAMN, the M109R is one PHAT bike! ...although, I still sorta can't get past that goofy headlight shroud. Hasn't grown on me yet. Had my first sighting of an M109R cruising down the road the other day while walking my dog. Dude must've just picked it up, still had the temp on the back.

I think that 109 looks pretty sweet, I like the flames.

There's a nice full test and review of the M109r in the new Motorcycle Consumer News.

I think the flames tie into the chrome headlight pretty cool. Not sure about the ones on the tank though,, they are cool,,but might have done something different.
